Netgear DG834

Hi, I hope I'm posting on the correct part of the forum.

I use a Netgear DG 834 - wired as our two desktop computers are directly above each other downstairs and in a bedroom.
I have a Sony all-in-one which is fairly new.

Firstly, sometimes when the Sony goes into sleep mode the internet connection seems to drop and very occasionally requires a re-boot of the computer.
This is not much of a problem but recently I have noticed that the router sometimes makes a clicking noise as though it is switching off although the connection remains OK.

Has anyone experienced this type of noise and does it suggest a fault in the Netgear which is just two years old. I am considering 'going wireless' for the odd occasion I need to install my computer in a different room and to run a laptop which is also something I am considering. Might it be safer to buy a new router now rather than wait to see if the current one fails?

Any comments would be welcome.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what a Sony all-in-one is?

I never noticed clicking noises from my Netgears, but I do from my 2700s, as they power up. My first thought, therefore is that the power brick is failing, and it might be worth checking the connection and, if possible, trying an appropriate universal power supply from someone like Maplin.

I use a wired Netgear DG834 v3 and have never noticed a clicking sound, in fact it's been great on ADSL2+.

Are you running Windows 7?

I have a DG834 and had a problem with loss of internet connection when waking up from sleep mode. However I found from a forum that this is liable to happen in Windows 7 64 bit and is nothing to do with the router.

I've fixed it by keeping my machine always awake. Control Panel - Power Options - Change sleep to never.

To Rik: Sony is a VGC-JS1E - it's a good machine, I got it as a retirement gift a year ago. I might try changing the power supply and see what happens.

To Cecilsboy: Welcome Peter, I run Vista 32 bit but I will try adjusting the sleep setting as you suggest, that should solve half the issues.

i just thought i would comment that i have also had that strange clicking sound in my dg834gt, it sounds as if a switch has been flicked but doesnt affect internet just a bit baffled as to what it is

Rik - you were 90% right.

I changed the power supply but the clicking was still there. Now I have moved the router onto my desk instead of underneath and there is still a clicking from underneath, so it's not the router.

My next thing is to sit under the desk for an hour or so and try to work out which of four power supply units is making the noise.
Unless of course there is a mouse behind the skirting!
