What happened while I was away

Been away for a fortnight. Modem left connected but PC off.

Speed had been gradually dropping from 15Mbs down to 13Mbs (noise 6.0) before leaving but I return to 9Mbs and noise of 9.0.

What has happened. It is it a BT ruse to get people to switch to fibre (due in Brentwood on 30th June)?

BT test before:-

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

Download Speed
11981 Kbps

0 Kbps 21000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 11981 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 2000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :15870 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1100 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 13000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 18.61:22.86:58.53 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

BT test today:-

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

Download Speed
9982 Kbps

0 Kbps 21000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 9982 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 2000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :10885 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1101 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 9000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 21.22:19.77:59.02 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

Never go away and leave your router on. A power surge or a thunderstorm can both cause damage and a low sync event.

Can you post your downstream router stats, preferably before and after. A 3db increase in target noise margin should only cause a 5-700k drop in sync speed. Have you re-booted the router?

Rik,

I deliberately left the router connected because, after reading threads herein, I try to avoid resynching at all costs! I shall henceforth turn it off.

Yes, I did resynch and got no change.  I am using a 2wire and hence RouterStats-Lite. What diagnostic info can I give you from either the 2wire statistics or RouterStats-Lite?

Joe

Rik

Downstream sync speed, noise margin and attenuation.

I agree with you about generally not dropping the line, but always do so (unplug the mains first, then the router from the line) if there's thunder around, or you're going to be away for much more than 24 hours. Ideally, run the the router from a UPS.

No attentuation available.

I can't use those links, Joe, I presume they are locally stored?

Certainly, for those stats, I'd expect speeds nearer 15M than 11M.

Tell me a bit about your phone wiring. Do you have an NTE5 master socket, the type where the bottom part of the faceplate can be removed. What is connected to the line - phone (DECT?), Sky box etc. Is the router connected to the master socket or an extension, if you have extensions, how many?

joe

Rik,

Sorry, files attached.

Yes NTE5 - router 4feet away.

No DECT to master socket, following a previous thread of yours, I replaced it with a normal handset.

Yes SKY+ box to master socket

One extension with DECT attached

Set up has not been changed.

Could help desk see a problem from their end if I give them a call although I appreciate my stats are better than a lot of other peoples?

Should I try my Netgear DG834GT??

Rik's away this pm and I can't see the pictures from my phone IMO you've had a period of instability and the margin has been raised to counteract this. There is also the possibility that the downstream has been banded. Can you connect the router directly to the test socket and see if there is any improvement in the router stats. Remove any bell wire if present on the extension. Sky boxes are noisy either disconnect or try double filters. Support should know when the problem occurred and hopefully have suggestions to get your downstream sync back

If you don't have multi-room, leave the Sky box disconnected for a while.

Rik,

Support were not able to spot anything wrong but did advise that whilst I was away, earlier than expected, my exhange has become fibre-optic enabled. Can this addition at the exchange have affected my situation?

Fibre-optic promises up to 40Mbs and in my case I'm likely to get 21Mbs. I was promised upto 24Mbs with ADSL2+ and firstly did get to the dizzy heights of 15Mbs which has now dropped to 9Mbs.

So by joining Home Fibre, and paying more for the privelege, I could alledgedly get my speed back up and a little better than promised by ADSL2+. Is this all a ruse to get me to pay more to stand still?

I can't see how it could, since the systems are separate, but with BT you never know.

No, not from IDNet at least. They will do their best for you whatever package you're on, and they know you can walk away with a month's notice.

joe

Rik,

Home Plus Fibre is a twelve month contract NOT one month - so that's a change.

Anyway I'm taking the plunge - will keep you informed of the huge improvements when they transpire!

Rik

Sorry, I should have added that, I was referring to the main range of 'copper' ADSL.
