Hi there, me again............I'm about to move to IDNet on Tuesday............Hooray  ;D

Can you help me make my mind up?
I have a Zoom X6 Wireless Modem Router which I have just found out needs the Firmware updated on it (I haven't updated it since I bought it 3 yrs ago.......too lazy) Anyway, I was wondering what does the Forum think, should I update it now (before I move to IDNet or should I wait until I move to IDNet and after the 10 day settling in period before updating it. Well, what do you think?

:thnks:

I tend to fall into the "if it ain't broke" school of thought, Harry. What does the update claim to fix/improve?

Rik, it doesn't have a history on Zooms website.........but it looks like I have missed a number of updates (3 yrs of updates). It is working at the moment but would this update improve things for me or would it make things worse......you think leave well enough alone?
Thanks

It's impossible to say whether it will improve things, Harry. In theory, at least, it should but Netgear, for example, regularly used to break things when they updated firmware, so I just don't know. If you have the ability to 'roll back' the firmware if you don't like the new version, you have nothing to lose.

I think it's impossible to say one way or the other without seeing a changelog for the updates, and whether you've been affected by any of the bugs mentioned in the changelog. If not, then there is no advantage in upgrading, unless there has been a new feature added that is of interest.

Guys, thanks.......I think I will leave well enough alone. I don't think you can roll back the update. There is no forum like this to see if the firmware update has been a success or not.

Thanks

Firmware upgrades are a bit of a grey area. A lot of people believe that if something works it should be left alone, while others like to stay up-to-date and perhaps take a little risk (I'm in the latter group).

When it comes to something like an ADSL modem, I suspect that the update will give improved performance, especially given that Max probably wasn't even around when your current firmware was developed.

Before going ahead, though, I'd see if you can find any further information about what it offers. It may well be worthwhile. :)
