Hi,

For no apparent reason my connection is totally shot.
It was working OK for the last couple of months.
I've got the faceplate off the main socket and plugged directly into it.
I've tried two modem/routers, first a Belkin, currently using an Alcatel 510.
I'm using a DSL nation filter which I swapped out today.
The download speed is ridiculous 200Kb/s or worse

Below is the output from the Alcatel 510

DSL Flavour = ADSL over POTS
Reserved Bandwidth (kbit/s) up/down = 448 / 3360
Uptime = 00:43:39
kBytes Tx/Rx = 1902 / 3881

Properties
Output Power (dBm) up/down = 12.0 / 18.0
Attenuation (dB) up/down = 30.0 / 53.0
Noise Margin (dB) up/down = 15.0 / 12.0
Vendor Id (local/remote) = ALCB / TSTC

Statistics
Loss of signal (local/remote) = 0 / 0
Loss of power (local/remote) = 0 / 0
Loss of framing (local/remote) = 0 / 0
Errored Seconds (local/remote) = 0 / 0
Loss of link (remote) = 0

The BT speed tester put out the following

IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  3360 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 119 kbps

Any ideas/guidance very welcome

Thanks

Rik

Hi, welcome to the forum, have a karma.  :)

Your profile and d/s noise margin indicate that the line has been unstable, and that the BT line management software has reacted to this. Are you noticing a lot of sync losses?

Hi,

Thanks

Before I changed the filter the line was so bad I couldn't use the telephone.
There was loads of static and I could hear a modem type noise in the background.
When the phone was hung up the line went out of sync and I had to keep rebooting the router.
Changing the filter got rid of the interference but did not solve the speed problem.

Disconnect the router, then dial 17070 and choose option 2, the quiet line test. If you can hear more than a gentle hiss in the background, report a voice fault via 151.

If the noise stops, then the filter or router are faulty.

It sounds to me, though, as if you have a line fault, possibly if an HR fault - what happens to the ADSL signal when the phone rings?

Changing the filter has solved the problem with the phone.
The line is clear now without interference.
Now I need to deal with the dead slow connection speed.
I'll call IDnet in the morning about that, don't see what I can do really.

Thanks for your help

Rik

If the noise has gone from the phone, you may find the ADSL problem resolves itself over the next few days. If the phone was affected by the ADSL signal, chances are the reverse was true. If your line now stabilises, then the profile will lift and speeds will return. Keep a steady sync for 14 days and your target noise margin will reduce by 3db, then a further 3db after another 14 days. That's worth 1-1.4k in extra speed.
