I wonder if someone can give a definitive answer to this question? I thought I might pick up one of these on Ebay to have a play with.

I was looking through the threads in this section and read that it may not be possible to control the 2700 from a remote location via the Internet. I just downloaded the 2Wire Web Remote Access User Guide and it implies that you can connect remotely provided your browser supports SSL encryption, which it does.

The guide indicates that one can remotely access files on network computers and also the 2Wire gateway configuration pages and logs.

Am I right in thinking that to do the later and access the configuration pages I need an additional password which may be know only to BT, assuming it were an ex BT item I bought.

I'm a bit confused on this one so any help would be welcomed.

Thanks,

JB.

Sorry, JB, but I've never needed to try this. Hopefully, someone who has will be along shortly.

I'm pretty sure that it's possible, but AFAIK, no one (myself included) has ever been able to get it to work.

I think it's as easy as enabling remote management in the advanced firewall settings, but I could never find any refer to which port remote management uses.

Thanks Sebby. I've uploaded the remote access guide to some web space here :-

I'm not sure if you have seen this before and whether any of the info in it is useful?

Many thanks,

I hadn't seen that guide before but having read it , it seems to be a facility provided by going through the '2wire' servers. Whether it is available will depend on the ISP for which the 2700 is designed i.e the firmware with which it is supplied and the options they have supplied with it.
I'm afraid it is not available with BT firmwares.

I have been using a 2700 for a while now and AFAIK there is no way to access it remotely by the user.
The ISP's can access them using the TR-069 remote CPE management protocols but that is a secure, encrypted protocol available only to ISP's.

The 2700HGV Manual says ...

2Wire provides a suite of enhanced services: Web Remote Access, Firewall Monitor, and Parental Controls.
If your service provider offers these enhanced services, links to set them up are available on the gateway Home page.

The Remote Access Gateway is not enabled on BT, or Singtel provisioned 2700HGVs.

These use 2wire's CMS software, which is not publicly available.

The 2wire site says.........

Manageable, Upgradeable, Future-proof
Every HomePortal( includes 2700HGV) is remotely manageable via the DSL Forum TR-069 specificiation. Via the 2Wire CMS management system or another ACS, service providers can activate, provision, and manage differentiated services. Remotely managed HomePortal gateways enable revenue-generating services for today and tomorrow.

It looks like it's disabled on the BT firmware. :(

OK. Well many thanks for all who replied. It rules it out for me because I find it very useful to access my router when in Spain, about 30% of my time. I currently use the Linksys WAG200G's, one in UK and one here in Spain. They give me a ssl connection to their interface via the Internet.

Will have to find something else to play with.  :dunno:

Cheers all.

The easiest routers to access remotely, I've found, are Netgears.

There is a clumsy way around this if you are using Windows XP (except for the Home edition) on your home computer.

You can set up both computers for Remote Desktop and use that method to login to your home PC.

Now you can start your browser and http:// into your router in the normal way.

From there you have full control of your router, as long as you don't change the wrong thing and lock yourself out !

p.s. Be sure to have Port 3389 open in the router firewall before you start, else RDP won't get in past the router in the first place.

Not the easiest solution, but it should work ok
