Third Party Router Detected

I've only had my dual SSID 2700 for a couple of hours, but already I've had a bit of an oddity.

I came back to my computer and couldn't get onto any sites - apparently gateway.2wire.net couldn't be found. I checked the router page and everything was fine; I was still connected with the same session as when I set the router up earlier.

After trying and trying, I got a strange 2Wire message saying that a third party router had been detected.

I decided to disconnect and re-connect the PPP session then everything was fine.

Are there any dual SSID experts that can offer an explanation?

I've managed to find the answer. It seems connecting my mobile phone to the wireless was to blame. For some reason, the 2Wire sees it as a router.

To disable this, go to http://home/xslt?PAGE=J09 and there's a tick box right at the bottom.

This usually happens when you have 2 routers trying to serve DHCP, but I have also seen it when there is one router and the DHCP settings are confused.

You can disable the warning by unticking the bottom entry on  This page

Slow down,, give us a chance to think about it  ;D  ;)

Thanks, Alan, that makes things a bit more logical. :)

I definitely don't have 2 devices trying to serve DHCP. I think it's that I've assigned my PCs static IPs, but other devices (my mobile, for example) I prefer to get one via DHCP (obviously I've ensured that the DHCP range isn't going to conflict with those addresses I've manually assigned).

Sebby

Right, it just happened again, but I now know why for definite.

Firstly, the internet doesn't stop working like I said in my first post. What happens is that the router is trying to display the page http://gateway.2wire.net/xslt?PAGE=HURL08 but can't because I have the DNS' manually configured in Windows. When I replace gateway.2wire.net with the router's IP, it brings up the page about a third party router being detected. This time, I let it "fix" the problem, and it put my phone's IP into a DMZ plus zone. Obviously I've got to get to the bottom of this (perhaps I should let all my computers be assigned an address via DHCP) but at least I can see where the problem lies.

Simon

Sorry, can't help, Seb, as I don't use my phone with mine, and wouldn't have a clue where to start!

Simple? That's just boring!

I've solved the problem by giving my phone a static IP too (it's good because you can assign a particular connect an IP whilst letting others remain DHCP).

I had that issue when I usd a 2700 Sebby, and mine was a mobile wifi phone, confused me for a while then did as you did and it was all ok :)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

I've never really understood DMZ. That's what the 2Wire wanted to do with my phone...

Lance

My understanding is that it is a pretty much completely unprotected part of the network, which the router separates from the safe side of the network. I was happy for my phone to be in this area, but wouldn't be for a proper pc!

I had it with my Normal N95 but not the 8GB model, I avoided DMZ for protection really and managed to get the firewall working with full protection for the device :thumb:

might take a while as i have 32 devices on the network and only 5 static >:(

Sebby

Have you tried disabling this "feature", Dean?
