open office

any one use this.

I have a document open in this and have recently been adding bits to it by pasting but when going back to it today when clicking at the next line to add more its bringing up the table toolbar, the added text has been entered as a table for some reason.

just starting to use this so not familiar with it at the moment

Sorry, Baz, I'm so old-fashioned I still use WordPerfect. :(

lol........thought I was bad when I used it. still have a copy of it some where, I liked it ;D

I still do - I used to be able to recite all the arcane key combination for the DOS version in my sleep. ;D

when I had to pass documents to other people they always had bother opening them in Word and had never heard of Wordperfect.

I hate to admit it but just went with the majority in the end, easier  :blush: :blush:

I know what you mean, Baz. I still write in WP, but if I have to send it to someone else, I then convert it to Word. I just find WP so much easier to do things in.

There were so many around then and most could save in the other's format.

It was fun trying to remember how to use them - it was also possible with a younger and more agile mind.  :'( ;D

I use vim (actually the graphical version 'gvim') for text editing where the format is not important or desired. It's a hangover from when I supported Unix as it's similar to the 'vi' editor.

I'd love to be able to use Emacs as I understand it is very powerful but it seems to be very complicated and there's still a lot I could learn in gvim yet.

Well done on finding this gem  ;D

This may not be the solution for you, but the automatic creation of tables is usually done by the Autocorrect function.

To stop this function from creating a table...

Open Tools > Autocorrect and select the Options tab and untick the 14th box labelled Create Table, you should now be able to edit without unwanted tables appearing.

Whilst the Option Create Table is ticked,  a table is created when you press Enter after typing a series of hyphens (-) or tabs separated by plus signs, that is, +------+---+. Plus signs indicate column dividers, while hyphens and tabs indicate the width of a column.

If this doesn't work, congratulations, you have discovered an undocumented feature  :bawl:

well that seems to have worked Alan but now Im finding that where a table has been in the document if I try to add anything in that space it still opens as a table. its as if there is some code still there wanting to make a table. :dunno:

Have a read of the Help section for Open Office, enter hidden fields display (Writer) into the search box.

The options to see hidden formatting is found here...

I remember using Amipro on windows 3.11 as well as Word 6. I don't think i ever used WordPerfect but my granddad did.
