hi all got a netgear wireless router triedto set the net work security up on it at mo its on open data encryption wep and then network key.think it should  be set on wpa-psk but when i tried to set it to that i could not reconnect to the router sohad to put it back to open is it ok set up like that.many tanks

Lance

Left open, it means anyone within range can connect to your network and use your internet connection, not good! I've never used netgear, but Rik has written a very good guide on it. You'll find the guide in the frequently asked questions thread, which is a sticky at the run or the help board. Wpa is a absolute minimum.

So, are you saying that you are now up and running with WEP?

yes

Rik

Can you use a cable connection to make the changes, Crem? I suspect that once you turn on WPA you are losing your connection wirelessly until the process is completed.

ah do you have to be connected to the internet to make the changes

Rik

No, but you do need to be connected to the router. When you implement a change across a wireless link, you break the link.

so how do i go about it the router shows up in my wireless conection so do i now have to connect to it as if i was going on the internet

Rik

Yes, the previous connection won't work as you've changed the settings. It's much easier, for this reason, to make all the wireless settings when connected with a cable.

Quick everyone ......round to cremator's house to download loads of mp3's!!!!!   :)

On a more serious note you should definately invest some time securing your wireless network. People using your connection to download illegal content are not the ones going to be busted by the internet police.  You are!!!!!!!  The connection is your responsibility!

I have a Netgear DG834GT and I've always found the security side of it to be easy to setup.

This is how I would do it.

Login to the Router
Go to the wireless security section.
Select WPA-PSK
Enter the password (key) that you want to use.
Apply the settings.
Reboot laptop / PC to "break" the connection or do a manual disconnect using the wireless software / windows software.
Once rebooted / disconnected scan for wireless networks and select yours from the list.
Enter the new key.

You should now be connected using the new security settings.

hi ok will try that tonight thank  you for your time many thanks will my son pc beable to pick it up and dose this all have to be done wth the yellow cable puggled in or can it be done with out it

As others have said, after changing the security settings, you'll need to delete then create the wireless connection in Windows as it will be set to WEP otherwise. :)

If your using Vista you have to jump through a few hoops to find the old connection. It does like to try and connect with old one. Its good with a new connection as it guesses the encrpytion and all you need is the password. Can I suggest you change the network name or SSID so you will effectively be looking for a new connection with no previous settings . In defence of Vista on the same machine I find the wireless stability much improved than when XP was installed
