NAS drives

Is anyone on here familiar with NAS drives especially the QNAP TS109 2 I have one of these and its working almost perfectly for what I need it to do ie stream from twonky to my ps3 but on the installation setup it didnt go thru mounting the drive into windows xp, so it does not show up in windows explorer or in my computer. I have circumvented this by using winscp and using ftp to access my files for copying from pc to nas, but I would like to be able to access the backup feature of the nas and add the network printer. I have tried the usual ways to mount the drive via windows xp but it doesnt seem to work, would it need a complete reinstall or is there a way to access the files on the hdd and delete the setup portion for QNAP to go thru the install again and mount the drive thru windows?, all help would be appreciated thanks

I have used a buffalo linkstation live, the setup was via the web interface i.e shares users and persmissions and printer server activation. You address the shares via UNC i.e //servername or ipaddress/sharename then username and password if required. When the share is opened you can then map the folder/drive as you wish.

If you've managed to get root access via winscp I would be careful as with a linkstation you can turn it in to a useless brick

I've also used a Buffalo LinkStation Live, and it's decent. I've heard good things, and read good reviews, about the Qnaps, too.

Having had a quick browse through the manual the Qnap finder software does basic administration and mapping of public shares and the rest of the admin/setup can be done via the web browser. Insructions for printer setup are also given. If you cannot see your shares make sure your firewall is not blocking them. Lastly don't delete any sytem/setup files via winscp otherwise I think you will be in the doggy poo.

No I'm not that daft at least I like to think so. Ive tried via QNAP finder to mount the drive and it asks for usernamer and password which I put in then I get cannot log into the server and share folder and check the network connection and username and password, which seems daft as it will connect via the interface thru the web browser and via the ftp. Only (open in explorer mode) does not work obviously as windows doesnt see it other than in my networks places which I put in there. I have tried mounting thru that avenu and it sees the share files when I browse thru tools mount network drive etc but when I select the share it wont give me the ok button so I'm in a bit of a quandry as what to do next, unless of course there a fault with QNAP's software

No offence intended either having used winscp on my squeezebox controller I can delete every single file on it if I wish.

Have you tried having the share with the exactly same username and password as the PC that you are logged on to?

Just an update on this one apprently its nothing to do with my nas drive that I cant map the network drive it must be something on my main pc setup as I have now connected my laptop to the router and installed qnap finder on it, then mapped the network drive and all went smoothly and I now have it all working via my laptop but my windows xp sp3 doesnt see the network drive when I try to map it, the wonders of bill gates???, ANY IDEAS?

Ive checked the exceptions in windows firewall as its the only one on there and qnap finder is in exceptions and file and printer sharing is off. The funny thing is in network places ive got icons for my router, tversity, twonky(which is on the nas) and another which is the ip address of the nas and if I click on them ie twonky or the nas ip I can access my files. It just wont let me mount my nas as a drive, it says it cant find on the network yet it plainly can, weird or what. Send bill an email?, I suppose I can revert my machine back to when I first got it after backing up all my files etc but thats going to be a big pain

Perhaps its only semantics but I think you can only map a NAS share as a drive in Windows and it will depend on the access rights to that share that will allow it to be mapped or not. Using the run command in windows \\servername gives me the root folders of each share on my WHS,each of which can be mapped,(only the root folder of the share can be mapped), I suspect that the NAS is ok I wonder whether sp3 has messed networking and file sharing up

Thanks for the ideas and yes Rik ive disabled the firewall and still no change and it seems file and printer sharing dont make any difference either, will check the services running against my laptop to see if there any anomilies
