Lan speed tester v1.0 here if anyone looking for such a utility, windoze only. Nothing installed it writes a file to a network folder reads it back and then deletes it and displays the results.

Thanks Rik. My homeplug network was seemed to be performing poorly. I've managed with this software to re jig a few things mainly by switching sockets and I've managed to get much better performance. I think it does indeed just write a file (you pick the size) and read it back and then it outputs the transfer speeds and deletes the test file from which ever local network folder you have chosen to test

Perfect for the job, especially at that price. :)

It outputs something like this

                       ---Writing---     ---Reading---
Packet length   :      10,485,760        10,485,760
Time to complete:      4.3080000         4.7120000
Bytes per second:      2,434,020          2,225,331
Bits per second :      19,472,160        17,802,648
Mbps:                     18.5700989       16.9779282

Which I presume is ok for a wireless 54g file transfer  via wireless router and then "homeplug" LAN to a local network folder

It's probably reasonable, Steve. A comparison with a wired connection would be interesting.

I think I need to get some cabling between router and server, but to avoid the wrath of she who is to be obeyed I will have to run it via an outside wall
