Erm...what have they done?

I was using the beta for ages with no problems, apart from Natwest's website doesn't support it as it's a beta, nor does Hotmail. Anyway all was well so I thought I'd install the finished product. Oh dear. I've now lost all my passwords for forums, websites, online stores, etc etc. It's not that I don't know these passwords, and if I have it's easily rectified by the email recovery (as I've just done for these forums!) but what on earth are they doing releasing a browser that doesn't store & upgrade as normal?

Oh, and the search panel doesn't work anymore. My friend is also telling me that under XP Pro it's hanging on launch too, or taking a long time to load. I was actually seeing this with my laptop on the last version, so I don't know what's going on there.

Anyone else had/having problems?

Firefox is currently at v3.0.6

Beta for v3.5 is still in beta, so what finished product did you install?

Firefox is slow to start and it's well documented, maybe it's getting a bit to bloated

Time it starting normally, then start it in 'safe mode' and spot the difference

I was messing with browsers yesterday and came across this problem, the new Safari 4 (beta) opens almost instantly, Opera's the same (quick) even IE8 is almost instant

I've been using FF for years, and I do like it, but I'm going to give Opera another go for a few days

I don't know what it it is about Opera but I just cant keep it on my system, havi ng to make individual site adjustments bugs me maybe or occastional crashes, but I am not really bothered by how fast my browser starts, FF fires faster on my system than IE7 wont try IE8 for a long while and anyway, also what's the big rush, I like the features in Opera, but it just does not make me feel comfortable and I have never known why, also that's getting bloated with each new release I think, I use firefox with a very limited set of plugins maybe that helps.

Firefox has always upgraded for me without any problems. I don't suppose you'd moved your Profile folder for any reason, Niall?

Nope, I've done nothing and I've even installed the latest version to the same folder the beta was in. I think I'll backup my bookmarks and uninstall it completely, then reinstall to see if that helps.

Well problem solved. I deleted the profile and the Firefox folders, ran Ccleaner then installed it again. Now it works perfecly. There must have been some sort of conflict with previous profiles from the beta that the standard version didn't like.

Oh well, back to smooth sailing. Just wish I hadn't lost about 200 passwords!

Oh, whilst installing my add-ons (download helper, dictionary (my spelling is awful after 3 years of reading horrifically spelled letters from customers!)), I found a theme called NASA. It's a nice black theme which looks great and goes well with my black Samsung monitor

It's okay, but I prefer a slightly darker theme. I am using pitch black with Thunderbird though

I've never thought to use themes in Thunderbird, just used the default. Looks great with Pitch Dark, cheers

I didn't realise that you even could use themes with Thunderbird. The only reason I stuck with the M$ email client in the past was because you couldn't read you Hotmail accounts with Thunderbird, but now you can't even check Hotmail with their own email clients unless you've got an old version already set up from before the change, which I have on my laptop, but can't be bothered using it all the time.

I was talking about outlook. With Windows mail you can, but not everyone uses it. I actually was playing with it today after my sisters hotmail account got hacked (not sure how as there was no virus on her pc, or the work pc; must have been someone guessed her password unless M$ are keeping a vulnerability quiet) to change my password to something new and just as strong, but couldn't find the password change screen. It used to be really obvious, but I got lost in page after page of nonsense I didn't care about.

Still, it now knows my Twitter and Flickr pages now
