New 2700hgv - help

Well, I finally got one of them 2700HGV thingys, and I'm trying to follow the setup.
I fell at the first fence.
Following the setup instructions with the PC (XP Home) off, I connected power, thernet and phone to the dsl port.
Did the factory reboot after 4 or 5 mins and the hub rebooted.
Green lights against power, ethernet, broadband, red light against "Internet"
Fired up the browser (IE) and tried putting in "Home".
The tab reads Connecting.... and the "Home reverts to http//home/ and nothing happens
Tried disabling the connection, still nothing.

The internet light won't go green until you've put in the username and password. What happens if you type http://192.168.1.254 into the address bar of the browser?

this is the setup guide I was following, but I couldn't get past the IE stage. It wasn't responding to "Home" in the URL window, so I couldn't get any further.
IE was just sitting there saying "Connecting..."
I have to disconnect my Netgear and reconnect everything so I lose internet conn - I'll try Rik's suggestion but is there anything else I need to look at before I do - all this gets tedious If I have to keep on disconnecting the old router and reconnecting it again.

Don't disconnect the Netgear from the phone line, just switch the network cable to the 2700. Only plug that into the phone line once you've established connection between the computer and router and entered your username/password.

After, it can then auto-detect the necessary parameters for you (though I recommend checking afterwards, as I found it made some odd choices, even though they worked).

I certainly saw a big improvement in both sync speed and stability over a Netgear, Steven. Typically, my Netgear would drop the connection every 10-12 days, while my 2700 holds it for months at a time.

When your Noise margin drops to 6dB (downstream) you will see a good increase on 4064kbps, reach 4544 and that will give a 4Mb profile !

Well, so far not great.
I have to say that whilst the download speed has improved a tad, I'm a bit dissappointed with the wireless strength. I decided to try this router because of the distance to the local exchange primarily, but I was expecting an improvement in wireless power but that does not seem to be the case. The lappy downstairs still only shows a max 2 bars on the ol' strengthometer.
Contrary to what's regularly stated, the firmware is fixed at one. There is a dropdown but 1 is the only option.
So, apart from feedback and a big thankyou again to all who helped me through the problemmatic setup yesterday, I have a related question...
I decided to reconnect my old Netgear router downtarirs, so HID could connect wirelessly to the Netgear with a stronger signal, and it does work but the signal keeps dropping, both/either on the 2Wire or the Netgear.
Is it telling me I can't have two networks on the same telephone line at the same time? Lappy d/stairs is Vista, 2wire is connected to XP home desktop
The 2wire is connected via ethernet cable

You can only connect one modem or modem router to a phone line.

You could use the router with the better wireless as an additional access point, On this router DHCP and firewall off and give it an static IP out of the DHCP range of the gateway router.

You could buy a separately wireless access point (looks like a router but is simply a wireless gateway). This would plug into the 2Wire and you could connect through that wireless instead.

Well, I gave up with the 2700.
The wireless connectivity is just useless. The best I could get is 2 bars on the wireless strength, then it would drop to one, then drop the connection altogether. Moving the router physically seemed to have no effect.
I went back to my old Netgear DG834 v3 and bingo - 4 bars straight away, solid for the whole evening.
I'm at a loss. Everybody seems to rate this 2wire unit for its wireless output strength, but unless you go for the Sigtel firmware you can't increase the output power, its fixed at one. In my modest 3 bed semi, (which does have very hard walls, I'll admit) it just ain't man enough for the job. Wireless connectivity just ain't anywhere near the ol' Netgear.
Anybody wanna buy a 2wire router?

It's possible you got a faulty one, Steven. The wireless connectivity gave out on one of mine, after about six months, but the one I currently have works just fine. Admittedly, I'm only in a two bedroom flat, with paper thin walls, but it also picks up several routers in the surrounding vicinity, with at least 3 to 4 bars, so I don't think they are all bad.
