Webspace - Help Required

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a bit of help. I have search through these pages and can't find the answer to my problem although a couple of topics have come close. Creating web pages is new to me and something that I have just decided to explore. I have enabled my free web space.

I have found some useful info here and have created a simple txt web page which I have uploaded to my free webspace.
I have used IE to upload it and can see the files from ftp. I wasn't sure if I needed the folder or just the file, I'm sure it's just the file, but I tried both:-

FTP root at ftp.idnet.com

04/28/2009 10:38AM Directory html
04/28/2009 10:34AM 362 myfirstpage.html

If I double click on the file name it opens as a web page. But if I browse to my web site, http://kanda.www.idnet.com I get:-

The website declined to show this webpage
HTTP 403
Most likely causes:
This website requires you to log in.

This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage.

What do I need to do to be able to view the page from my browser at my webspace address ie:- http://kanda.www.idnet.com/

You need an index.html file to be able to 'see' the page, Sparky. Here's mine:

I think that I must be missing some basic info here or just being "thick" sorry.

What needs to go into an index file?

I created a file called myfirstpage.html which displays from my browser, in it's own folder on my HDD.

It contains:-

Download NVU its free and pretty easy to use.

Create a page called index.html, put something on it, save it, upload it to your site. Should work fine.

Don't forget to refresh the page.

If you use Firefox, The add on "FireFTP" is really good for uploading files to your site, again, its very easy to use.

Ah. Got it.

The first page has to be index.html.

So if I rename my txt file to index.html it works !! Aha. One piece completes the jigsaw!!

I had no problem in uploading the files Ted, it was that they wouldn't do anything when they got there

I see that there is lots of you guys using NVU. Trouble is it's not supported anymore after being sold off, I think the only "kind of supported" version is KOMPOSER ? As I have a nice new Vista system I'm scared of that!

I have a son at Uni who has got a copy of Expression Web, yeah I know it's MS and it's probably way over the top, but I was given a book for my birthday that uses it for examples, so it may be easy to follow?

Might be worth mentioning that NVU is the stand alone version of the Composer component of the Sea Monkey browser suite.

This is all I picked up on........................

Linspire contracted with Daniel Glazman from Disruptive Innovations to be the lead developer and maintainer for the Nvu project. Daniel was the chief architect for Mozilla Composer and brought a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to the Nvu project. Nvu was started from the Mozilla Composer code base, as the Mozilla Internet suite was broken up into individual pieces (browser, email, etc.). Nvu picked up where Composer left off, adding additional features, functionality and ease of use.

Linspire abandoned the Nvu project when it was sold to Xandros in 2008. Fortunately, Fabien Cazenave picked up the project and started updating Nvu under the name Kompozer. Both Nvu and Kompozer versions can be found on our Download page.

Correct. To complicate matters, it's actually how the server is setup; I'd say 99% are set to default to index.htm/html. But it can be something else if the server is setup accordingly.
