You're not thinking of Linux are you, Simon? Has Sam finally worn you down? ;D

A bit OT to this thread but Microsoft is raising money in the bond market.  I'd have thought a monopoly was awash with money, but that's neither here nor there.  The real question is why they feel the need.

Could it be that since Windows Mobile is going nowhere fast, MS are up to their usual tricks?  If you can't beat it, buy it and, they have RIM and Blackberry in their sights.

Apple and the iPhone and, for that matter RIM, must be giving them sleepless nights if they are going down that road.

Rik

MS have been feeling the pain of late, Tac, with their first ever redundancies. That said, like you, I'm looking for an ulterior motive.

I wouldn't have thought so, Simon, but I might be wrong!

No, I think you're probably right.  :)

I wasn't thinking of anything, really, just musing.  ;)

Noreen

I thought that a blackberry was something that you picked off a bush and then ate or maybe picked a lot of them and put them in a pie with apples. ;D

Simon

Could have been worse, it could have been a raspberry, Noreen!  :)x

Well done, Noreen, 50+ posts and no-one had managed to work food in properly. :)

I've been looking at the firmware upgrades, and it seems that they can be made 'generic' by removing one of the files, once downloaded onto the PC, before uploading to the phone.  I'd be slightly nervous of 'bricking' it, so I'm hoping this one already has the latest firmware.  I think it's going to be quite a steep learning curve!  :)

Upgrading and downgrading the firmware is a doddle and nothing to be afraid of. Make sure you back it up and 3rd party apps too, then run the Loader. Only downside is that you may lose some of the settings on the 3rd party apps but it's easy enough to change them back to the way you had them.

Thanks, Steve, that's reassuring.  You're not planning on going anywhere for the next few days, are you?  ;)

Rik, is there any way we can trap someone in the forum, so they can't escape?  ;D

I would recommend using the Basic Procedure until you're more familiar/confident.

http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/proper-upgrade-downgrade-procedure-53359/

Also

and if it all goes wrong

Although all I tend to do is delete the vendor.xml file and run loader.exe from the same folder.

I've been looking at Crackberry, Steve, and as it's a US site, I was wondering if their firmware is the same as ours?

Doesn't matter where the firmware comes from as long as you delete the vendor.xml. I'm currently using firmware released by a Service Provider in the far east, Korea I think...

probably ahead of myself, but I wonder if a different OS can be installed on these things?

I wouldn't have thought so, Simon. Possibly Linux, though, as that can be installed on virtually anything it seems! :)

Simon

Just upgraded my O2 Simplicity contract to the Blackberry bolt on.  Not got the bloody thing yet!  ;D
