Yes indeedy, my luck as struck again!

I ordered an Asus ENGTX260 Nvidia graphics card from Scan as mine went pop a few months ago. Today it was delivered, with a second along with it  ???

When I was getting the confirmation emails for the order, I was only able to access my email account via mobile phone, so when I was seeing duplicate emails coming through I thought "pfft, flaky 3 email client" and shrugged it off.

As it turns out, what has happened is when I placed the order first, the credit card (my mothers) has the security password (ironically that I set up to order Clapton tickets a few months ago) and I couldn't remember the check for security so I cancelled out of the order. I placed another order with a debit card that I knew the password for as I had to set it up as I was doing it! :D Anyway, it turns out that Scan have somehow processed the order without me putting the security answer in the final stage.

How the hell is this possible? It's not a great problem as I'm going to wait 3 days to make sure payments clear, then if they haven't cleared on my mums credit card (cancelled order - no security pass so surely no funds released you'd think?) I'll wait for Scan to contact me. If they don't I'll have a cheap SLI solution :D

It's a bit worrying though that you can place an order, not do the security to allow funds to be released, and still complete the order! Anyway, I'm leaving one in the bubble wrap to make certain there are no problems if I do have to return it. I would like SLI though :D

The card security bit is outside of the retailer's system. However, it does seem poor that Scan's systems take the order before final confirmation that security has gone through. I don't particularly like Scan, so if they don't charge you twice, I'd keep it. Or, if you're worried about that, send them a letter giving them x number of days to collect the card, after which point you will assume ownership.

Niall

I'm going to leave it for 3 days. That's long enough for any payments to go out, then I'll start contacting people. I'm sure Scan will be on the phone if they haven't had payment.

I probably "picked" the worst time to spend 3 months of not updating. So far I've downloaded nearly 1gb of updates for Vista and other security programs! I'm glad I keep installed programs to a minimum on my PCs now :D

Your hard drive is going to be going like crazy for hours after all those updates. :o

Ha, the card comes with a code for the new Terminator game. 6gb download!

Also if anyone hasn't tried it yet, get the O&O defrag utility. I used to use it a while ago but it's VASTLY improved. I've been running it on my laptop yesterday and it's sorted so much trouble I was having with speed. It's got my main PC down to 0.30% fragmented too! Very impressive!

I'm using the trial at the moment, but I'm definitely buying it when I get paid at the end of July. Well worth the £29.99 it costs.

Christ, the game lasted about 4 hours. I'm torn. Should I be angry because it was 6gb of my bandwidth, or non plussed because it was free?

Meh.

Well it's official, the security check on your cards on websites is a joke. You simply close your browser at  the point of the check, and the payment goes through. My mum called the credit card company today and they confirmed payment was taken. I've just had the RMA email as the credit card company contacted Scan (I'd have loved to hear that conversation if this is a one off) to get the money back. The best part is that they threaten to not refund the money if it's not returned packed and in a box like it was when sent. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm not because I'm looking at the unopened package next to me) it's one sheet of bubble wrap in a citylink bag, and nothing else, so why should I spend extra money on returning something at a cost to me when it was their error? Plus they're insisting on recorded delivery.

This strikes me as being a little bit underhanded considering their security check is supposed to block payment if you fail the check! I wonder if I can reclaim this money that I'm now forced to spend.

It makes the credit card cheque pointless and also you have just found a loophole to which to get past it which is not good news  >:( I am waiting for Amazon to mrefun me almost £1000 pounds, they have the product I have the delivery proof but it has not been processed by thier "Fulfilment department" so i pay interest on a grand and they say it can take up to two weeks.  :shake: But back to your situation Niall I would contact the bank in question and say what happened that was not authorised and that is pretty alarming if thats all you need to do to bypass the system and abuse a stolen card if thats what was happening. So much for security checks.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

I would say to scan it was their error so they need to arrange collection of the item.

But the password cheque is run by the banks in question though, isnt it, Scan would implement it but that check should stop the payment even being excepted surely  :-\

That's what I was thinking. I've told my mother to phone the credit card company and tell them that we shouldn't have to pay the cost of registered delivery as it wasn't our fault the security check didn't work.
