Please help me with these stats

Hi. I'm trying to get my head round the fact that my download speed is often slower than my upload (which is fine). My pings are good too.

Although I normally use a wireless connection, I've also tried a wired connection with the router plugged into the BT master socket and my landline phone unplugged. This produced only a marginal improvement, nothing dramatic.

Here's what my router reports (Linksys WAG54G2):

Here's a BT speed test result:

Any suggestions welcome.

We've seen a few instances of this, and unless you have an incompatible router, I believe only IDNet can help, but I'd be happily corrected.  :)

Do the noise and attenuation figures look normal? I'm not sure what to look our for.

I'm not the best qualified to comment, but from others I've seen, they don't look too bad to me.  You must be quite close to the exchange, yes?  I believe the noise margin to aim for for Max, is 6.0dB, but it may be different for ADSL2+, as it's more sensitive to noise.

I'm sure someone will be along in the morning to clarify this for you.  :)

Read this thread as it appears you're being affected by a known WBC problem.

On a separate note the high target SNR Margin of 10.5db is indicating an instability in maintaining sync, probably due to external noise or interference being introduced somewhere along your phone line. Considering you have an attenuation of 9.5 downsteam (which is fantastic), I would of expected speeds in the 19Mbps range.

Really the throughput problem needs to be fixed first, but you could ask idnet to reset your target SNR margin to 6 dB, to see if your router can maintain the resulting higher sync speed.

I agree with what's been said, Rob, there's a bunch of people, not just with IDNet, who are seeing throughput running at around 10% of profile. BT are updating software at their nodes (slowly!), which may address the problem, but you need to let IDNet know you're affected so that they can escalate your case within BT.

The d/s and u/s margins and attenuation look like they've been swapped to me - it would be worth asking support what values they are seeing.

Thanks guys. I'll phone IDNet now.

Tech support indicated that my noise margins were unlikely to be problematic as I'm getting good upload speeds and good line sync. I didn't get very far with the suggestion that my d/s and u/s figures may be swapped (probably didn't explain it too well).

Apparently BT will be doing some work this weekend that may improve things for some. IDNet certainly seem to be well aware of the issue.

I imagine even BT can't afford to let this drag on for too long, what with more and more exchanges offering LLU.

You could look into disconnecting the Bell or Ring wire and fitting an ADSL filtered faceplate, if you haven't already. I wouldn't fiddle with it too much, you have a good sync speed (once the throughput is sorted).

Things have definitely improved this evening for me:



Maybe I could squeeze more out of it by removing the ring wire, as suggested. I had a look behind the faceplate a couple of days ago but couldn't see more than a single twisted pair, plus another wire that wasn't connected to anything. It looks like there's another plate that can be unscrewed. The non-connected wire wasn't orange and white, so may not have been an already-disconnected ring wire.
