Many hammer all over the wall and believe that with each blow they hit the nail on the head.

Rik

The heat from those things was massive. :)

I bet it was and I read the other day that they were not that reliable either or they needed someone there all the time cant recall the deatils but interesting to read

Did you have first hand experience of this monster Rik ?

Will they use modern parts to get this going ? ....cheat in other words ?

I visited the Joe Lyons one, David, which was massive and consumed power faster than a heating system. I can also remember the early ones used by Schweppes, which required air-con just to function.

I think I remember that when it was on show in Birmingham, if I remember right all it could do was play checkers but this was considered amazing at the time  ( well it beat me easily enough ). If they rebuild it I wonder where they get the valves from?

David

I wondered if they will somehow put modern parts as to run this as was would be classed as very anti green.how many 100 watt bulbs is this equivalent to ?

The only one I had real contact with was at Fort Dunlop in Birmingham, it took up one entire floor of the main office block and as Rick says required air conditioning to maintain an exact temperature, you could only enter the room through an airlock, and yes it did need constant staff to service it day and night, mainly for changing tubes , kicking relays and untangling tapes, reels etc.
It could never be switched off because switching back on would blow too many tubes.

Rik

The power consumption of these beasts was equated to the Blackpool Illuminations, David.

:eek4: Given that how can they reboot it I can see people screaming blue murder....that aside if this is/was in a confined space the heat must have been unbearable

I wondered it looks noisy and I don't know but would imagine there is some form of machinery going on inside although its electronic I wonder if there are cogs and things operating inside as technology was really in its infancy I would have thought ?

Rik

A few cogs to drive the paper, and later, magnetic tapes. A lot of relay chatter, but mainly the whistle of aircon going full tilt.

Most server rooms are still air conditioned to keep the heat down

There was a video on ThinkBroadband, showing a connection to IDNet at Telehouse. The noise was deafening!

Strictly speaking it's a "boot" not a "reboot". :P

I read that they are only moving it 12 inches so really its a case of the reboot being on the other foot  ;D ;D
