OK - I've already documented my Linux (Ubuntu) woes elsewhere, but today I took the plunge on my main PC and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04 as a part of the dual boot setup (PC2 is still Vista - but may not be this time tomorrow).

My biggest issue with Ubuntu has been getting it to play with my ATI graphics cards (both machines) and having to sacrifice eye candy for functionality, but AMD seem to have fixed the problems with the latest 9.08 drivers. The install took 30 minutes, Vista still works, and less than 30 minutes additional work has my Ubuntu side on the home network, controlling PC2 using synergy, and with my main entertainment software (spotify under wine and SecondLife) working like a charm.

Plus I have all the eye candy I need.

ATI drivers were a PITA until now, but suddenly, everything just works as it should. It's a shame Sun's JRE isn't a part of the standard install (which had me stumped for 17.5 seconds when YouTube wouldn't work), but instead of the Windows like searching for patches and multiple reboots, it was fixed in a matter of minutes (I made a cuppa - it was done when I came back).

I'm still likely to buy Windows 7 - when I know exactly what it is I'm buying (given the confusion since they relented and decided to offer the full version in Europe - but who knows what they will get now) but I'm hopeful it will be the last version of Windows I'll ever need.

Let the fanboy fight begin (Win, Linux, Mac) ;)

Have I lost my way?

I vote for Doors. Opening them and going outside, seeing hills and mountains and new people and turning your pc/mac/Linux distro off for as long as you can  ;)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Me too!...

... but when I do need to use the computer, it's Windows all the way for me. I'm not a member of the "Microsoft is evil big business" club - MS and Bill Gates changed the world for ever and made it a better place - but I do share D-Dan's hope that 7 will be the last version I need. I get thoroughly fed up with constant tinkering and updates, most of which is no more than prettifying and foisting upon us a new, and MS defined, way of working. XP does everything I need.

I don't think Microsoft are evil. I don't have anything against them. There is just better alternatives out there, and unfortunately no one really knows about them because Windows is what they have always known.

I knew DOS in an earlier and more innocent age. ;)
