Have at it!

I've noticed my download speeds be somewhat erratic in the last couple of days, and messenger randomly logging in and out.

At first I thought it was an ISP glitch but as my router just completely locked up on me (which it's done a few times in the past, and I've always been unable to update the firmware since I bought it; I think something has always been knackered) with me being unable to log in to it at all, I think it's time to consider a new router.

So, to the boring question. I know I've seen a few posts on here in the last few weeks but I was wondering what is recommended that is able to support the upto 8mb I'm using now and will work fine with the new, yet to be activated at my exchange nippyness (or dog slow as the case may be). I'm currently using the Netgear DG834G (not sure which version) and this is the type of router/modem I'd like to keep using as I don't have a need for a separate modem & router as this has enough ports for the network I've got.

So is there anything better for the same price range? I don't really fancy spending a truck load of money on over the top routers, and I would love it if it works with the upgrade in March ;D

I'm sure the recommendations will come flooding in soon, Niall, just not from me.  ;D  I currently have a 2-Wire 2700 HGV, but I'm not sure how 'future proof' they are.

The underside of the Netgear will have the router's model number, followed by by a "v" number, eg DG834G vX.

My Netgear DG834G v4 had no problems with Max and is now doing me proud with WBC.

I haven't even bothered updating the Netgear's preloaded v5.01.01 firmware either.

The 2700hgv work fine with adsl2+, Simon. :)

Check which version of the DG834G you're using, Niall - anything less than a v4 tends to be poor since they use an AR7 chipset. Go for a v4.

Niall

I actually think it's the 4, although it could be the previous version as I seem to remember seeing something about the 4 just after I bought mine :D

Well anyway, I've had no problems since, and I'm skint so it can wait ;D
