hi all.

i'm thinking about getting a new netgear router just to see if it helps with my problems.

my current one is a dg834g v3.

i'm thinking about getting the version 4 or 5. does anyone know whats different between them all ?

plus on my current router, if you touch the top of it, the ethernet port lights go out (router on its way out?).

Rik

From everything I've heard, Paul, the v4 is the one to go for.

I was fortunate to be able to try both a dg834g v4 and v5 on my Idnet connection. The v4 was significantly faster than the v5.
Hope this helps in your decision.

I'd also go for a v4 - it's what I'm using at the moment (with DGTeam firmware).

Whats different with that firmware?

Sebby

It's an unofficial firmware, and it gives you a lot more options, plus I've found it to be more stable.

I'll phone support tomorrow to see if they have any DG834G v4 in stock.

My v4 has failed after only 18 months so I have gone with a Billion instead. Netgear support has been terrible as they wanted me to re-connect it so they could do some tests, despite me telling him several times that BT cannot even see the router, so how on earth could he and that I have done my own tests, factory defaults etc and no ADSL light whatsoever. I also explained that BT are doing some tests to my line and I could not reboot it anyway for fear of upsetting my profile even further than it is currently.
I have now binned it, despite it still being under its 24mt warranty and told them I will boycott all future Netgear products as they have refused me an RMA.
Also my v4 ran very hot to the touch from day one and it was mounted vertically in its stand with plenty of open space around it.

I've never heard a good comment about Netgear's support...

Rik

I have... From those getting away from it. ;)

For balance, my old faithful DG834PN hangs onto the connection like a limpet. It went nearly two months recently without a disconnect until we had a power cut.

Rik

Unusual to get limpets in routers... ;D :out:

You must have some in yours, the way it clings to its connection
