defrag

dont know if this is a daft question or not but i have never noticed it before.Just done a defrag and internet pages,this forum as an example are really speedy or is it just IDNet.

Also I use PerfectDisk to defrag but got a message saying something about having to do an offline defrag on reboot....or similar didnt read it properly.Dont remember getting that on other times.

It might be accessing the cache easier, but that's about the only thing I can think of that might make a difference. Others, of course, may have different ideas.

Yeah it'll just be the fact the hard drive is now sorted correctly (or at least more efficiently) . I see the same thing after a defrag using O&O, set to SPACE. Nice and nippy

A boot-time defrag means that it's found system files fragmented, Baz. Let it do it and it should help even more.

The defrag tries to sort the drive into contiguous files, making the seek time shorter.

I've found that the benefits of Defrag have become less obvious as PC hardware has evolved. Years ago I'd run it once a week just to reclaim fragmented disk space and it also used to identify lost chains and clusters (I'm not sure if it still does that as I've not had any for years). I'd be surprised if it gave a faster browsing experience as there is very little drive activity while browsing although of course the browser application will load faster.

It's something that's worth doing from time to time but I don't believe you'll see as many benefits as you would have five years ago.

Well, if your loading up webpages you usually visit, the pc will be loading the old copies from your HDD first. This saves on bandwidth, and also is faster to access. Any new information/pictures or whatever are then downloaded to update the pages. So if your HDD is fragmented alot, this could slow things down.
I don't know the speed benefits, but everyone's system is different, or they use it differently.

I use auslogics free defrag programme and have to say that it is excellent. auslogics provide several free clean up programmes and all are very stable and provide no problems whatsoever, have used them regularly over a 3 year period. Well worth a try

Ensure you opt for the free version (unless you want to pay of course

) The free version works really well. My suggestion is to find it via download.com (Cnet). You will not be disappointed. They also do a free registry cleaner which is safe too plus other useful cleaning tools. Good luck

If you want another suggestion, I use Smart Defrag which also works well, and is free. You can schedule it to run at a given time, or invoke it on demand. It's pretty quick and offers three defragmentation modes.

well I finally got round to trying this and it seems pretty good.nice and quick although my drive wasnt very fragmented but still speedy,simple to use.
