Moving house cost

I'm moving premises fairly soon, but will have a new number. I'm going to take my ADSL with me. I'm wondering whether i've read it right that the only way to transfer the ADSL across to new number is for IDNET to do a cease/reprovide, thus costing £47.

I was with Nildram (in the good old days) and moved house and was not charged, similarly I notice that PlusNet offer 1 free house move per 12 month period.

Just wondering if there is a reason for the cease/reprovide and consequent £47 fee?

If you haven't already though, ask for a simutaneous provide - much easier if your phone line rental is via IDNet.

Thanks guys. I was aware of the BT charge.

So in theory, i could migrate to say Zen on a 1 month contract, free of charge, move my ADSL for free (they offer one free house move every 6 months) and then migrate back to IDNET for free ...

But I probably won't and I'll end up stumping up the £47.

Read the small print, James, Zen may well stipulate that, if you move within a certain period, you become liable for the charge.

No, brand new line going in. Hence already paying quite a bit to BT. Anyway, it's all academic as I'm going to put more money in BT's coffers and pay the £47 fee.

I was just trying to avoid it that's all - but it's an interesting point why some ISP's do pass it on and some don't... (and FWIW I can't find anything in the Zen small print specifically mentioning it...it seems all you need to do is stay with them for a month following the move). However, until someone tries it, it's not a done deal!

ISPs have to pay BT. They can either pass on the cost directly, indirectly (eg a minimum term) or spread the costs amongst all users.

We'll be moving house in a couple of weeks. We've been in touch with BT and have our new number. They say the line will be switched on on the 22nd. I've not done anything about BB yet. Is it too late to get IDNet to put the line in?

It's where the line and BB are activated on the line together, but I'm not sure what the time scale is for it.

Not sure if that's 100% right Rik. When I phoned on up Tuesday I was told it was £47 just the same.

As for us, it would appear that we were too late to get a simultaneous provide as we didn't get a CSS ref number (

) off BT when we contacted them about the new line. We called again and asked for it but apparently they are unable to give us the number now.

What would be the most efficient way to get our BB switched over to the new house/number (which will be switched on on the 22nd) now?

I don't know the answer sorry, but as it stands I think you won't be able to get broadband until your new line is activated, is it possible to start again i.e cancel what you've put in place?

I had the same problem when we moved before christmas BT gave us the runaround,
I just waited until the new line went live and the rang Idnet BB went live in 5 working days.
I also used the opertunity to move to ADSL+2.

Yup and the first time we called about it they denied the existence of this mysterious "CSS ref number" and made my girlfriend feel a total idiot about it. Believing that IDNet actually know their arse from their elbow, I gave it an hour, called back and managed to get an adviser who had heard of it.

That's encouraging. We will be moving into the new place gradually over the next week or 2. Was their a big gap between your old BB get switched off and the new one starting or does it get cut off immediately?

That's the ADSL provide charge. IDNet are about £20 cheaper than BT on the phone line.

Sorry for the delay in replying work comitments.Lost BB when line cancelled at old address then BT messed eveything up,
so no BB over christmas and new year.
Had to use a 3 dongle while BT sorted out tranfer finally happened crismass eve about 3pm.
Problem was time of year, rang Idnet 4th Jan BB went live 8th Jan
