How do I change file permissions?

I get the following error when installing SMF.

Some files need to be writable for SMF to work properly. This step allows you to let the installer make them writable for you. However, in some cases it won't work - in that case, please make the following files 777 (writable, 755 on some hosts):

* attachments
* avatars
* cache
* Packages
* Packages/installed.list
* Smileys
* Themes
* agreement.txt
* Settings.php
* Settings_bak.php

I've no idea either, Glenn, I've got SMF installed on my WHS but I didn't encountered that error when I installed it.

It's actually very simple. You do it when uploading the file via ftp, or just change the settings by selecting the file on your server, again using an ftp client. Filezilla works fine for that. I think you just right click on the file and it's in the options.

It's been a while since I've done it, but I'm sure that's the only way to do it. Even if it's not on a server. I could be wrong, I've only ever done it on my webspace, and it rarely cropped up as most packages have the permissions set correctly before installing it.

I just tried using webinstall.php, it fails to download either 1.1.11 or 2 RC2

Looking at your post on wgs Glenn you mention a user PHP? Can you not as administrator assign the read write permissions through the security tab

There is no PHP user listed nor will it let me add one. Maybe I should install an FTP server and do as Niall has suggested?

Ray, did you use whiist to create your website? I've done a full re-install of WHS, just in case I messed things up, but it still won't install.

No I didn't, Glenn, when I set the smf Forum up on my Server I did it as follows: -

I created a folder called inetpub on my D: drive and then a subfolder within this one called smfforum, I then installed the smf software into this folder.

I then went into IIS Manager, default websites, and created a new Virtual Directory which I then pointed at the newly created directory on the D: drive.
