iPhone Advice

My daughter wants one and her criteria is she wants a touch screen, to be able to listen to music, take pictures and run apps. I presume she might also want to use it as a phone sometimes

I'm just wondering if anyone has an opinion on it and its suitability for all of the above.

I think its success says it all.The downside for me is the quality of the camera.

An alternative could be, a Google Nexus One, or HTC Desire.

It should also be said that there several cheaper alternatives with similar basic functions. I don't think it can be disputed that iPhone is king of the apps, though.

They are very good, have an above average speaker on them to listen to music (as I accidentally discovered this weekend) for something so small. Apps are really good (some are awful). Support is shocking. Battery life is terrible (3% battery life used in 5 mins browsing the net on 3G).

I'd wait for the new one that's supposedly coming out later this year in the hope they fix the battery life, as that is a major problem with it.

Other's to perhaps consider, Zap, might be the BlackBerry Storm, and the HTC Desire (Android). The new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 also looks quite good, and has an 8MP camera, if I'm not mistaken, and is Android too.

My son is looking to get an Xperia X10 (Which is indeed an Android phone) soon, he is very impressed with the specifications but of course that doesn't necessarily mean it will be as good when he gets it. I have an older Android phone and providing you don't mind Google having information about you I find it pretty good and of course there is no requirement to sign up to a Google account if you don't want to. There are a fair number of apps on the Android marketplace now, nowhere near as many as there are for the iPhone but I've never noticed a shortfall - sure, I can only choose between 3 different apps for a function rather than 10 but as long as I can get a working one then that's all that matters! My biggest gripe with the iPhone is that it's a sealed unit - unless they have changed it recently you cannot even replace the battery! I thnk that they have long changed my other problem which is the way that you get tied into Apple products as soon as you buy any one of them. It used to be that you *will* end up with Safari, you *must* use iTunes, you *cannot* connect any 3rd party peripherals we don't approve of and so on but like I said, I believe that has been changed now.

I'd also say LG offer some good cheap and mid range Touch screen phones. No "apps" but those are just geek toys in most instances. Good cameras too!

The only thing that worries me slightly about the SE X10 is that SE have had a pretty poor run of late, and a lot of their phones have been slated in reviews, and have ongoing faults (the earpiece in the C905, signal dropping out in some of the 'G' series), and I have an X1 (the one with the slide out keyboard), which I don't use because you can hardly hear it when it rings, even at it's highest volume. Also, it has Windows Mobile on it.

I'm very tempted by the X10, but I'd want a hands on play with one first. Also, I currently have a very good deal with O2 with my current BlackBerry (£20 per month, SIM only, 1200 mins, 600 texts, and unlimited data), which I don't really want to lose, and if I start using a non-BlackBerry phone, I'd have to switch contracts, or pay additional data charges.

Android needs more development, and I have not trusted SE for a while Sadly, I'm still happy with my iPhone, it will run 4.0 OS, then i'll sell it as its legally unlocked and buy the new one that comes out this year.

I'm going to run my iPhone to the end of the contract in December, then go to a sim only deal for 6 months and get the 2011 iPhone. Well, thats the plan anyway!
