Problems?

For the last 30mins loading websites (esp flickr) are taking awhile. Pictures are slow at downloading aswell.

I'm noticing that the performance drops off almost exactly at midnight (ie start of the off-peak); mainly packet loss from the tbb monitor going up to about 10%. Not too much speed loss though, and not enough to bother bringing it up with support.

It usually lasts for a few hours until everyone has finished getting their Linux distros :whistle:

I'd put it down to congestion at my exchange, but maybe not, if Paul is seeing something similar?

Possible, Bill. Support haven't seen any congestion problems within IDNet, so it could be down to local exchange or other BT issues.

Going off topic... when fibre is available to someone, how will they know? Will IDNet be putting some sort of availability checker on the main site, or what?

I'm seeing the same problems as Paul in the early hours, everything gets very slow and iPlayer tells me I don't have enough bandwidth. Speed tests show otherwise so I haven't a clue what's going on but I don't think it's anything within IDNet's control myself.

I wonder how much off peak downloading is occuring on BT's network? I assume big file downloads have a major affect on capacity especially when compared to the equivalent time using a browser.

They must do, Steve, but then if Zap is seeing decent speedtests, to me it suggests a server congestion issue. Perhaps people schedule downloads for after midnight?

I think people do schedule downloads after midnight, certainly when the student's home I insist!

Whatever the problem is it can also occur during the day. For example I was browsing this list of websites http://www.vbadvanced.com/products.php?do=sitelinks&productid=4 earlier on today and they were all taking a minimum of 5-10 seconds to load. At the moment they are loading in around a second, two at the most.

It's an intermittent problem and as those websites are hosted all over the world it's not a problem local to them. My money is on an issue somewhere in BT's network because as I said before, speed and latency always test fine when the problem occurs.

That's interesting because at the moment they are all instant (under a second to fully resolve) for me.

Odd. It's less than 1 second to the base URL atm, but the links from it are running at 3-5. My hunch would be server load on the hosting, Zap, when you hit it determines the speed of response, a bit like the lag we see in the forum from time to time.
