I've been with idnet for a while now, and overall I'm very pleased, but it seems that very frequently the connection will drop and reconnect multiple times during the period 5 pm - 7 pm.  I wondered if this was a common experience?  I'm on Home Lite.

I can tell you for sure this is not because of IDNet. What it will most likely be is that during those times there is increased noise on your line, which in turns causes your noise margin on the line to drop and subsequently lose sync. It is when you lose sync that your connection drops.

It could be a number of things causing the noise on your line, from a broken filter to central heating coming on. However, as you say it always happens in the same period of time, during peak time, I would suggest that unfortunately it is noise external to your house and which you have no control or influence over. One possible solution may to get support to request to BT that your target margin is raised from 6db to 9db. That way, should your noise increase by 7 or so, you won't lose sync. The downside is that upping your margin will cause you to sync at a slightly lower speed.

You might also want to consider removing the ring wire from your phone sockets, which is a known cause of increased noise. See here for more information on that.

Finally, in another thread here we were recently discussing about noise on the line, which may help your understanding.

If you have any more questions please ask!

Right, thanks for the info - it's given us something to think about.  I thought it probably wasn't really an idnet problem.

Unfortunately, with MAX adsl being rate adaptive, meaning it tries to find the fasted possible speed for your line, the noise on a line has become a much bigger issue.

Just post here if you want any further help or information!
