A long time ago I started playing "The Elder Scrolls 3:Morrowind" on my XP installation. As I upgraded and started doing other things, I forgot all about it.

For the last three days I've been trying to get it working on Win 7 x64 with no luck.  Last night it worked fine, but today it just crashes - so I obliterated it, and rebooted to Ubuntu.

Once in Ubuntu, I installed PlayOnLinux (wine was already installed) and installed Morrowind there. I've just spent a happy half hour wandering around and doing stuff with no problems at all.

Strange to say that a Windows game runs more reliably on Linux than it does on Windows.  :thumb:

Would you have seen the same issues with Win 7 x32 though?

Well - since I use Ubuntu x64 - I'm comparing like with like, and Ubuntu is winning :)

Windows 7 is like going to OSX, not everything is backwards compatible.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

I am willing to lay money on it being the graphics drivers, not Windows directly.

I assume you've done all the compatibility modes + run as administrator. I'm running games from the 2000 era just fine on 7x64.

It's not a driver issue. Several people have posted online with problems with Win 7 and Morrowind. If I just install the base Morrowind it's fine. As soon as I install the addon packs (Tribunal and Bloodmoon) then things go pear shaped.

Ah, I guess that's why it runs fine for me then. I don't have the addons.
