What do you use for the username and password in your router? Would it be email addy and password?

Also, on my current ISP I was getting almost 5mb then due to their fault (putting me down to a 2mb package when I've been paying for 8mb!) I'm now getting between 1.5-2mb. Does this mean I'll only get 2mb max with idnet or will my line resync to take me back up to 5mb? (5mb is all my line supports).

Thanks.

Hi Tanzy,

Your chosen user ID followed by @ uk.idnet.dsl4

Password is your chosen one.

As for speed, I think that is also your choice.
Anything and everything that I post on here is purely my opinion, it ain't going to change the world, you are under no obligation to agree with me, it is purely my expressed opinion.

Tanzanite

Thanks.

What I mean is I'm not getting the speed I should be (the put me back up to 8mb but only getting max of 2mb) will it resync when I join idnet or will I be stuck with 2mb even if I choose 8mb package?

Hi Tanzy

As Inactive says, your username will normally take the form of a.user@uk.idnet.dsl4. I believe that there are some others, but that's what most of us are on.

The speed issue is more complex. Assuming it was an ISP which allowed you to connect at full speed then throttled throughput, then you will get the full speed your line will support. What's your current d/s sync speed?

You're going to have to be gentle with me here, I'm not a beginner at all this but not advanced either.

I'm with AOL at the mo, download is anywhere between 1.13mb, average of 1.50mb max of 2mb and upload is average of 150kbs and I'm on the 8mb package. I used to get almost 5mb until they mucked my package up.

Rik

Certain ISPs, Tiscali springs to mind, will connect you on a Max package, but then throttle the speed at their end so that you have the equivalent of a fixed-rate connection. Is this what AOL did to you, or did something else happen. Can you get at your connection speed, if you're not sure, instructions are here.

That will give us a better idea of what is happening to you at the moment.

Note that on AOL, you should have been using an MTU value of 1400. On IDNet, that needs to be 1458 or 1500. If you're not sure what I'm talking about (and I often don't know myself ;)), details are here.

Ok, the connection is :
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 3680 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 16.5 dB 18.0 dB
Line Attenuation 42.0 dB 20.5 dB
Output Power 18.4 dBm 12.1 dBm

Now to get my head around the MTU ! LOL

Rik

For that sync speed, you should be on a 3000kbps profile, with throughput of around 2800kbps.

That said, for those line stats, your sync speed is way too low, and it looks like AOL have had your target noise margin increased from the normal 6db to 15db or 18db (the increments are always 3db, so your router is probably mis-reporting). Did you have a lot of problems with line stability, eg losing sync? That would be the normal reason for such a high margin. Once the margin is back to 6db, or even 9db, your sync speed will go up and, when the profile follows, so will your throughput.

MTU & RWIN is the fine tuning, first thing is to get the line set right. If you set your router to 1500, then use TCP Optimzer, you can have it determine the best MTU figure for you. Subtract 40 from that, multiply by 46 and plug that value in as RWIN, then re-test as per the instructions in the sticky.

Thank you SO much.   ;D

All done and speed is much better. Still not what it used to be but much better. It's averaging at 3.60mb. The max I got was 4.80mb (which is what it was when I was first on the 8mb package).
But at times it's going back down to below 2mb.

With AOL the speed seems to swing all over the place constantly and I do know they secretly cap speeds at times.

I'm hoping it'll be more stable if I go with idnet.

Rik

A little tweaking is good for you. :)

When you get over here, IDNet can get your margin sorted and your speed will move up in line with the increase in sync speed that follows. As for stability, IDNet are my 17th ISP, and I am confident they will be my last - you will find we are generally very happy with the company. When there is a problem, they will tell us about it and keep us informed of progress. It's not many ISPs where the MD will phone you up just to see if everything is going well, but it happens here. The company also listens to its customers and last week they changed the Home Lite package from 2GB inclusive bandwidth to 5GB, is response to our feedback.

We like it here. :)

Well I will be ringing AOL tomorrow for my MAC code and signing up  ;D Would be nice to get a good service for once rather than people who are rude on the phone when you ring them up and half the time don't know what they're doing or say they'll do something then dont. ::)

Idnet will be my 5th isp move and sounds like I shall be sticking with them once I've joined!

Thanks again. My face now looks like this  ;D

Rik

That's the look we like to see, Tanzy. :) With IDNet, you will only speak (on the rare occasions you need to) to real people, no queues, no muzak, no menu choices. There isn't a script jockey in sight either!

It's what we like to call heaven...

I can verify that, having just spoken to them! Took a whole 6 rings for them to answer the phone!

I know you'll love it here, Tanzy. One of the reasons this place is so laid back is that we rarely have anything to complain about! :)

Sounds good to me!

Are you constantly sat on the forum waiting to reply to posts? LOL I seem to get an answer within minutes  :)

Rik

Not quite constantly, but I do try to hang around as much as I can, and I get email alerts if I'm not in the forum. :)

Well it's good to know in case of any problems but hoping that I wont have any! Especially as everyone seems to be very happy.

Rik

Lunch. :)

It's unlikely you'll have problems, I haven't had a major issue since joining and most people here will tell you the same. If you do, and we can't work it out here, a quick call to support will get real people working with you in no time. No script jockeys, no queues, no 0870 numbers, just friendly, helpful, effective support.

Hi Tanzy
Welcome from me too.  I've been here since July and not one single problem.

Did it take Rik 3 minutes?  That long!  Obviously time for his retraining period.

Rik

I was on my potty training period at the time.  :P

Ah.  There's more ground to cover than I thought.

But training to be potty is just right for here!
