I've installed the new OS just for the sake of it. It only took a few minutes to download, and less to install.

Can I use my own ringtone? No. Can I download a ringtone? Yes. Can I install a ringtone? No.

Why stop people from using their own ringtones? The phone only has about 6. If you have more than 6 people in your contact list you can't set specific ring tones for all of them. Why have they done this, and not updated it? In fact they even released an update a while ago to stop you creating your own and using it via itunes. Really helpful.

How so? If you can't buy something and use it, you get a refund which I did. Not buying anything from Apple doesn't make them money ???

You might find this useful, Niall:

I've tried that before. Even when you create them, itunes doesn't recognise the file with an itunes update they released a while ago. The problem is that I don't have a ringtones tab to actually move files over to, so I can't use anything at all. I can't find a way of creating it either :(

{edit} I stand corrected, with this new update I can now select a ringtones tab. Time to fiddle :D

Hmm, I have a tab but I can't see how you move anything from one list to another. I suppose I'll have to try that editing thing again at some point. Talk about making things difficult.

I already had existing ringtones, so all I did was load them into iTunes, converted to .aac, then dragged it to desktop.  Change the file extension to m4r, then you can drag them back to the Ringtones folder in iTunes.  Stupidly complex, but not impossible, yet you can only change the ring tone, not message tones.  This sort of thing is the reason I'm selling mine after less than a week.

Steve

I like the new home screen folders and the ability to see all the emails at once in the inbox. Not too interested in the improvement in the video and camera functions on the 3Gs but should be of positive benefit on the new version. I been using it all day, battery life seems unaffected and overall seems to be working well.Perhaps try a bluetooth keyboard someday.

iOS4 on the iPhone 3G seems to have a slight lag when opening apps now  :(

For example.. OS3.. touching the phone icon used to open straight away but now on iOS4 it takes upto 4 secs to open, can be really annoying

Simon

Can't say I noticed that, Paul.  One thing I would say for it is, it was quite snappy.

Gary

I am not bothered by ringtones I like sounds to be basic, if i want to create ones from albums I have downloaded I can, but to me a phone is a phone, it should ring like one and make sounds that are basic, so it does not bother me. I think the new OS will be faster on the iPhone 4 it has double the ram at 512mb but so far i love what it has done to the 3GS, but looking forward to playing with the new phone.

Lets look at the issue, ringtones.

As has been said a lot of people have created their own from a sound sample but IOS 4 prevents you from using them, instead you are directed to Apple's store to purchase one.

Now why would Apple change the functionality that has worked in past releases? Simple.

Jobs or one of his minions thinks 'hey lots of people are using their own tones, I think we are missing out a revenue stream there, how do we secure it?'

'if we take away their ability to use their own tones they'll have to buy from us.'

You may think you've bought the phone but oh no, what you've actually purchased or upgraded to is an even larger Apple storefront and you have allowed them to exert even more control over hardware you have purchased.

(for the record I am against any branding or excessive control on mobiles, not just Apple)

My custom ringtones are working fine with a 3GS on iOS4.

Is it when you try to add additional ones to iTunes which is now prevented?

I made mine with Garageband, this has a menu item "Send ringtone to iTunes"
