Good morning all,am having some connection issues at the moment, have just run speedtest, and while that is a touch down on speed about 5.8 meg as apposed to around 7 normally,I then run ping test, here's a copy of my results

ping and jitter are awful,it normally averages out at around 30ms ping and 0-2% jitter, also checking with cmd prompt that gave me average of 31ms,immediately after I run pingtest, although I ran it twice as first run gave me 50% packet loss,2nd run was 0% loss.
thought ideas as to why this is occuring greatly appreciated.
thanks
Ian

Is there any difference if the laptop uses a cable on the router downstairs?

Hi Glen, have just tested by connecting laptop to ethernet cable, removed from netgear wireless access point in bedroom

you can see i achieve good results when i do this and then when i go back to the wireless connection it goes bad again, any ideas as to why this would happen,am not IT minded to be honest but is there a conflict somewhere? ???

Looks like the problem is with the Netgear, have you tried re-powering it, or if you know all the settings to configure it, try a factory reset.

what sort of house you in big thick walls or not.

Steve

Might be worth changing wifi channels to see if one is better than the other

Thanks for the replies,I have just tried connecting to the downstairs router(d-link) wirelessly and have got great connection and ping/jitter rates

I then tried connecting straight into the router with cable and got this too

It is only when I go back to connecting to the netgear which is situated on the next floor, that it all goes pear shaped!

Any ideas, will try and look as to how to check  channel on the netgear.
Thanks

Ian

Glenn

What is the model of the Netgear?

Glenn,
have tried all ways, and it seems that laptop is fine wired or wireless when connecting to the dlink router,I've just run tests for last 5-10 mins and is fine, then as soon as i connect to the netgear router, back to this

The ADSL link itself is obviously performing OK so I'd say it is likely to be something occurring in the router firmware.

I've seen Netgear routers do some odd stuff when something goes awry with the firmware, that said they are still good routers and I have a DG834G v4 myself.

I'd be inclined to advise you to note down any import details and use the factory reset switch on the back panel (hold it in with a pin until the power LED flashes red twice)

Wait for the lights to stabilise and then open a web browser and go to the router's default IP of 192.168.0.1 and enter the default user ID and password and go through the config wizard again.

Cowie

Just an update, thanks for all the replies,I changed channel on the netgear and problem seems to have gone, fingers crossed.

Probable wifi channel interference from the router downstairs or next door, a sniffer program will tell you which channel your neighbours are using

I would download inSSIDer and check what wireless networks around are running on. I been running it this weekend gone and going to be tweaking my wireless sometime this weekend coming.

My wireless network is the "Paradise" one you see (red, grey & orange)

As you can see the grey one is all over the place, if I walk around the house this chart goes mental as it picks up more wifi networks. The above chart was taken when I was sat right next to the wireless extender.

inSSIDer is a good little program.
