Hello...

I've just been following an online article detailing the legal action some people are facing after being caught sharing "Dream Pinball 3d" via P2P and Torrents.

Looking at the legal documents - it details the procedure gone through - the vital part being obtaining the logs from the ISP which details who was connected.

Although I'm not involved (honest!) it did get me thinking just how long IDNet holds these details?  Is there a legal / industry standard?

Update

Having given my original reply that I assumed a six-year statute of limitations would apply, I was so intrigued by the issue I gave Simon a ring.

IDNet do not log user activity. The most detail that they could provide would be that, on a given date, a particular IP was assigned to a customer. Possibly, they might have records of the amount of data transferred on a given date from their accounting records, but there is no record of what web sites we visit, what ports we use or what data we transfer.

Of course, it is entirely possible that the Government or the US NSA has a big black box somewhere recording all 'net traffic, but there's no such record made or kept by IDNet.
