Signed up, speed question

Well, I'm now an IDNet customer, finally having escaped from the clutches of Eclipse :)

The migration went smoothly, and I'm now on the Home Supermax package. Upstream speeds (according to speedtest.net and the ThinkBroadband speed checker) are around 700kbs, which is what I would expect.

However downstream speeds are only around 2000kbs - I'd expect this to be much higher. I got approximately 6000kbs at times with Eclipse. The BT speed tester indicates I have a profile of 2000 - before it was 7150.

The router is syncing at 8128/832, with a downstream attenuation of 13db and noise margin of 7db.

So ... is the low downstream speed a result of the stable rate adaptation? I'm not sure if that happens after migration or not. Or so I need to do something else to improve it?

The speed is governed by the profile.

If your profile is at 2000kbps speeds will be below that level.Leave the router on for a few days and that profile should rise.If it doesn't move in 3 days call CS and they can look at getting it sorted for you.

Your stats are fine for a profile of 7150k, did you have any problems signing in to Idnet?
Turning the router on and off or resynching too many times can make the profile drop.

Adding to Dorset's excellent answer, Glenn, 10 of more disconnects in an hour will impact the profile. If BT are being particularly heavy-handed during the migration, they can manage to make it happen. :(

Hopefully it will rise again more quickly, if your line remains stable, but if it is still stuck after 3 days, support know which part to kick. :)

Thanks for the info guys. My part of the migration went smoothly - I just entered my IDNet credentials into the router and it connected fine, so there weren't too many disconnects as far as I was concerned.

I'll leave it until after the Bank Holiday and see what happens. By the way, by "3 days", is that 3 working days or just 72 hours?

72 hours, Glenn, BT doesn't give their software any time off. :) Note that the profile uplift can be on the fourth day, ie three clear days at the higher speed. Keep an eye on your router's logs for any re-sync events.

Before contacting support, do a BT speed test, here. That will give you sync speeds, throughput and, most importantly, your profile.

Before you do, Glenn, I would just re-run the BT speedtest to make sure your profile hasn't increased overnight.

Well, it took a little longer than expected, because support had to kick BT twice, but my speeds have now returned to what they should be:

Good news, Glenn (even if I do feel jealous :)). BT seem to be getting worse. After a year of Max, you'd have thought they'd have got the hang of it, wouldn't you. :(
