ok i am still in the market for a new flatscreen monitor.

been looking for 3 yrs and always something else has taken the money....

but looking again now to see how tech has moved and prices come down..i hope...

i have an old but still pretty good DELL 19" crt that weighs a couple of tons....

last time i looked i liked the current (then) Dell range of 22 inch lcd's.

Now looking i see there are LED Backlit monitors with huge contrast ratios which i dont think were around last time i looked...nor do i know their pros and cons ?

Anyone recommend a good monitor for some gaming and general internet use in the 23" or 24" area....tbh i'm looking to pay as little as possible....aint we all !  but certainly under £200.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-093-LG&groupid=17&catid=1425&subcat=  caught my eye....

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-085-LG  one of these new led backlit ones ?

Given my price bracket i am not expecting the best panel type (still ips?)  but just want the monitor i get to be a great monitor in its price range...

thanks

Rik

Sorry, I don't have any experience of LG. :(

Use a better shop for starters, ocuk is terrible in every aspect

Look through those, find one with a price you like and appearance. Google for a review. iiyama is fine for normal use. samsungs are supposedly ok.

I use an Iiyama Prolite E2407HDSD, and find it fine for normal browsing. (I can't comment on gaming however). I normally get my stuff from Aria and its worth looking out for their "Deal of the day" that will save a few more ££.

I've found them to be normally pretty good on their service and interestingly they also offer (at a cost) a dead pixel guarantee on monitors, which you may or may not consider money well spent.

That's currently the best "bang for buck" 24" monitor on sale at the moment.

If in doubt have a look at the customer reviews for it!

Really?

I've used them for over seven years and spent a few thousand pounds with them and had no problem at all. I've also RMA'd a few items without any problem at all.

netn00b

thanks all.

and i will also say i've used Overclockers a fair amount of the past 4-5 yrs with all the components for my current pc coming from them, plus grahpics cards since and some memory.  never had an issue with them.

i'll check out those links though you've given me :)

interestingly this one took my eye to Griff...but i've never been a fan of BenQ - always worried they are somewhat cheap and lower quality?

Rik

BenQ have poor colour accuracy, imo, but are OK in other respects.

They're absolute cowboys. I actually bought my monitor I'm using now from them to save a few quid when money was tight and didn't have any problems though. However, in the past they've totally fleeced me by supplying me dud RAM and then charging me a restock fee and refusing to return the money. Scan are the same if not cheaper prices and are far more reliable in my experience (with one exception, about 9 years ago). I always check out OCUK for offers, and more often than not, anything on offer there is the same price as normal on Scan.

I think a lot of it is hearsay and rumours.

Myself, friends and colleagues have never had any problems with OCUK whereas I've heard some horror stories about SCAN.

As for prices I get free courier delivery on any item (regardless of price) from OCUK so they often work out cheaper when buying multiple items all year round.

Niall

No, it's not hearsay, I speak from experience. I've had a few bad experiences with OCUK, and only one with Scan. Scan now seem to have very good support. When I bought a motherboard and realised to my horror when it turned up that I'd forgotten I'd changed gfx card types (when PCI-E just came out). I phoned them and they sent out another motherboard free of charge when I told them this was on the way back. OCUK ripped me off. They did the same to my mate in St Helens and they've done it to a mate down the road from me too. A lad in work also had problems with them, with a dud graphics card in the middle of last year.

I know it can be luck, but the attitude of OCUK support staff and the owner himself, is nothing short of disgraceful at times. If you're willing to take that risk, then good luck to you, but I won't use them and will NEVER recommend them.

My only concern these days is delivery. As most use Citylink I now have a problem of arranging delivery. I'm never using that company again if it can be avoided. I'll be querying that with Scan before I place my order.

Just like I spoke from experience earlier where I said I'd spent thousands of pounds over seven years at OCUK with no problems whatsoever.

Granted you had problems but that doesn't make them cowboys. Talking of Scan I know of two people that RMA'd faulty graphics cards to them only to receive partial refunds rather than the original purchase price with Scan arguing they only refund "market value" on faulty returns.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 24" monitor I got from Overclockers. Had it for a couple of years and it's great. Service was very prompt and I have no complaints to say about them as a company.

There are sometimes bad batches of cards. Not really OCUK fault. However, they should probably handle their customer services better.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Over the years I've spent well in excess of £250,000 on PC components at OCUK. I'd agree with everything said so far. Their stock is good, their prices are competitive, their after sales can suck as can the attitude of some staff, but most of all their MD is a one of the worst self-righteous, idiots I've ever had to deal with. My annual spend with them has dropped considerably because of the bad attitude but I still spend £2,000 - £5,000 pounds there every year nonetheless (I'm actually in the process of putting together an order today).

Scan or scam as we like to call them are almost on a par with OCUK these days (the good and the bad). I do buy from them if the price is right but I certainly don't trust them. I've had quite a number of RMA issues in the past. You pays your money and you takes your chance with both companies I guess.

Yeah that's the point I was making. The products, good or bad are not a suppliers fault. What they then do to resolve the issue is. OCUK can and will do everything in their power to make thing difficult for you, charging you restock fees when they shouldn't be.

With regards to the point made above about Market value & scan, I believe that only applies if the card has been used for a period (or possibly at all, I forget which). I'm sure it's on their site mentioning the t&c regarding that.

so if not scan or oc who then ?

Niall

Price around. Personally I'd use Scan, but get them to use someone else to deliver :D

I just found that. 32" and it seems to get decent reviews. I may put the extra in the pot and get myself that :)
