Hi guys,

Thought I might as well check to see if anyone else has had issues today.

I've had 3 incidents this afternoon where I seem to lose connectivity for a few minutes or test pings lose packets.

On the third incident, I did some trace routes and this was my final one before it was ok again:

Tracing route to idnet.co.uk [212.69.36.10]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.0.3
  2    30 ms    29 ms     *     telehouse-gw4-lo2.idnet.net [212.69.63.99]
  3    29 ms     *        *     telehouse-gw3-g0-1-400.idnet.net [212.69.63.243]

  4    30 ms    50 ms    30 ms  redbus-gw2-fa1-1-1003.idnet.net [212.69.63.1]
  5    39 ms    42 ms    29 ms  redbus-gw1-fa2-0-300.idnet.net [212.69.63.225]
  6    51 ms    30 ms    35 ms  www.idnet.net [212.69.36.10]

Trace complete.

Earlier on when I tested just after a problem I noticed pings to bbc.co.uk etc were over 150ms, but then settled down.

I am connected to the Arkwright exchange in Nottingham on ADSL2+.

Any ideas? I haven't had any problems like this for a long time.

James.

Is your dialling code 01162?

Hi Rik,

Ah no it's 0115.

Have there been some problems today in other areas?

Rik

Quite a few, James, all week. If you route through Leeds, there was one which would have affected you. Unfortunately, BT don't list dialling codes for that fault.

Thanks Rik. It's only been today that I've noticed it although I've been radio streaming all afternoon so it becomes very apparent. :)

Though I had a loss of PPP early this morning, around 2am or so. The LCP went down and it wouldn't come back up. I ended up power cycling the router and it sorted it, so not sure if it was BT or my router. Though it wasn't my usual problem of a re-sync and loss of routing so something was different.

2am always points to BT engineering work, it's their favoured time to unplug things. There is a mass of work going on across the country as part of the 21CN voice upgrade and also with fibre rollout.

I've been doing continuous pings today to idnet.co.uk and I'm seeing some bad latency every so often, with the odd timeout.

No more reports of potential issues today?

I'm going to be doing a radio show in an hour so hoping it doesn't affect things.. Fingers crossed.

Nothing here, James, have you spoken to support?

Hi Rick,

Not yet though not a bad idea if I keep seeing this. Not sure, of course, if the odd bit of latency when pinging idnet.co.uk is to be expected. Though with the definite major packet loss I had yesterday in 3 or more incidents there may still be some problems.

Hopefully my show will go without a hitch though. With this level of packet loss (7 or so packets in a 15 minute sample) it should be ok.

Lance

The thing to remember is that the Idnet routers and servers are configured to treat ping requests as very low priority.
