I personally don't mind too much if they are not charging for it.

If they were of course that would be a different ball game.

I thought Microsoft did constantly do that though. Release things that aren't ready. After all there are patches every month for something, and the browser has updates too, viw windows update. Or at least used to. I haven't really looked at what the updates are unless it's something I'm interested in. Otherwise I'll just download it after quickly glancing over it, so can't remember what came out when :D

Indeed and as software is, for the moment at least, still written by humans errors can creep in.

I maybe wrong of course but I think the point Den was making was that MS does not replace versions as rapidly as Mozilla but as I say, provided it remains free.

I was just surprised that the are announcing so many upgrades to Firefox in such a short time. Why couldn't they just say that they are going to correct any errors by releasing updates and bring out an updated version later in the year. A new version implies a complete rewrite not just a update.  :dunno:

Sales? Um. I mean downloads. A new number = better. Obviously.  ;)

That's what I was wondering. Maybe they get investors, and the sooner they bring a new version out, the more it appeases the board

They are following  Chrome, each one will contain new features, there will not be stability or security updates between each update as there used to be unless its absolutely needed.

Yeh its on

Firefox is all default settings. just took 10 seconds to open. Chrome took 2. Its always been the case on both the laptop and desktop

Steve

I wonder if one of the extensions or whatever is causing the issue  :dunno:

I have changed from FF3.6 to FF4 on WinXP and Mint Linux 10. I find that V4 opens more quickly now.

I have seen slow FF opening in the past which I have usually traced to an add-on. I wonder if one of your add-ons is less compatible with FF4 and is causing issue?

FF was always more heavyweight than Chrome but not to the degree that it would stop me using it.

Would agree it sounds like an add-on.

Gary

There should be an update to day I think to 4.0.1 that fixes a few issues, next update will be Firefox 5 unless some major security holes are found.

I was referring to a freshly installed firefox. I never used to use addons anyway as adblock seems to make browsing sluggish too.

maybe im just anal about milliseconds of difference :P

pctech

its all that router stuff.

You start to count in milliseconds.

Its really weird you say Firefox takes an age to start, for me its a few seconds, that's with Adblock Plus using two subs easy list and easy privacy, which also does not seem to slow browsing down, maybe its not Firefox but your Graphics Drivers as firefox really needs the most up to date, but I get the feeling yours are anyway. dunno: maybe its different on windows to OS X but I find 4.0.1 very stable and a much improved browser over the older 3 series. Chrome is just to google for me, like Android, its how much privacy are you giving up to that company, although at the rate the internet is going that may be a moot point soon anyway  ;)

I've got a 5850 so it shouldnt be that. It also happened on my older system with a 8800gt and a e6300 rather than my quad. Chrome is instant, firefox took at least 5 seconds. For that reason, and that reason alone, I'm out!  :P

Baz

mine takes about 3 seconds thats with some add ons too its not that slow but may be you are just noticing it now compared to chrome.what about things like checking if its the default browser on start up or having it start going to a home page.

I dont have any of these set, sounds nothing but lots of little things might slow it down.

Niall

My firefox loads instantly, with about 5 add ons, and the normal plugins from other things too.

5 seconds? Wow that is fast.
;)
Pedantics aside, I mean, it is rather fast. Perhaps your individual setup has to do with it? Something unrelated is causing the slow down?
For example I set Win7 to "open new window as new explorer instance (folder, not IE)". So it takes longer to load, but with each folder an individual process, I can open 3 or 4, and they load pictures in tandem. Or if one crashes, because of a buggy preview image or software, it does not take out the rest of windows. (Well, it does not anyhow, but it means I have 1 window close, instead of 4 when I get a crash)

Possibly. I mean everything is standard really. In this case I tried after a fresh install and all is default. Maybe its more the fact of chrome being fast than firefox being slow  :red:
