I wonder if anyone can help me find autoplay for my dvd/cd drive, it appears to have gone walkies.
I have tried autofix but that couldn't cure it,I can play DVDs and CDs by going to My Computer and double clicking on the drive but I prefer Autoplay . I have had this problem before a few years ago but I can't remember how I fixed it (probably used my recovery disc)  :-[

Hi Wilf

Right-click on the drive in 'My Computer', select Properties, then Auto-play. There, select the actions you want for the various file/content types.

Alternatively, download this tool from Microsoft, which should do it automatically.

Hi Rik, I have tried both those to no avail, the auto repair wizard gives me this message.
"This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem".
I have tried an external usb drive and get the same result yet auto works on my digital camera and an external hard drive.

Does Device Manager show any errors against the drive, Wilf?

If you're running XP Pro, this registry hack might do it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
"AutoRun"=dword:0000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"allocatecdroms"="0"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

It might also be worth reading this.

Another tack, Wilf, may be to try this:

Go to Device Manager, uninstall CD & DVD drivers. Uninstall Primary and Secondary IDE channels under IDE/ATAPI Controllers - ignore requests to re-boot machine.

Go to Regedit, navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Look for the key which refers to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Delete the subkey UpperFilters, also LowerFilters if it is present.

Re-boot the machine. All should now be well.

If you've used Nero's InCD, this could well be the cure for you.

Hi Rik, I checked with devices manager and there were no errors, I checked the registry and everything was as it should be.
I am pinning my hopes on your last solution,(ie uninstalling drivers etc), I had Nero 7 installed so that could be the problem, I will have a go later and let you know the result.
Thanks for your assistance.

Rik

Good lukc, Wilf. The last one is a bit of a long shot - it's actually meant to deal with the situation where a drive is not recognised by the OS, but it might just do the job, especially as you've had Nero installed.

I have uninstalled the drivers okay but when I go into the registry I can't find any reference to Upper filters, when I highlight 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318'  there is a reference to a lower key in the right hand box thus.
"ab Lower Filters-REG_MULTI_SZ PXhelp20"

The subkeys are
0001
0002
Propeties

There is no higher or lower filter in those subkeys.

Rik

Try taking out the lower filter key, Wilf, then re-boot and see if it has helped. If it hasn't, I'm stumped. :(

No joy Rik, not to worry I will live with it,at least the drive is working.
Thanks for your assistance

Autoplay is weird. I do a daily backup of a subset of data to a set of RW DVDs, one for each day of the week. Some of them pop up the 'what do you want to do' dialogue, some don't, yet they all have the same data on.

Sorry I couldn't come up with an answer. :(
