Router recommendations

Hi,
I've been having major problems again recently and am inclined to think that it may be my DG845 router that is the problem.
I keep losing the connection with the Internet light going Red or flickering constantly. Leaving it off for 30 minutes doesn't always resolve the problem and on occasions none of the lights come on at all!
I am considering replacing the Netgear with an alternative and was wondering what people would recommend? Please bear in mind that I'm a complete ignoramus where this technology is concerned so simplicity is the key.

I have 2 PCs and a laptop connected with Vista and Win 7 OS.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Budget up to £100

Can you post your current router's stats, Trevor, particularly downstream sync speed, line attenuation and noise margin. From the web interface http://192.168.0.1 > Router Status > "Show Statistics" Button.

If you could get the SNR down to 6dB you could be going much faster!

What is the exact model number of your Netgear? It should say at the bottom.

Certainly there's an issue with the line which may have absolutely nothing to do with the router.

Have you tried the connection in the test socket to see if you get any improvement?

Model is DG834G v5
I have it connected to the test socket all the time! It proved more reliable.
Its strange because it can behave for a while and then, like today it becomes a real PITA. It will go several days constantly dropping the line and giving only a few minutes access at a time. I'm wearing out the carpet between the sofa and study going back and forth switching the damned thing of/on.

Do you have a MW battery-powered radio?

That could be your problem. It has a horrible chipset that doesn't play well with many DSLMs. The v4 is much better.

Am I right in thinking that the DG834G is a bit long in the tooth now? WOuld I not be better off buying a more up to date model?
