Is this normal? - repeated DSL carrier loss after troubleshooting

On arriving home yesterday, I noticed the internet connection was down. Initially I couldn't find any posts on here to indicate a known problem but later I read that there was a known issue.

Anyway, at the time I figured it was just my connection affected, so I grabbed one of my spare filters and ADSL cables, swapped them over with the current ones, and turned the modem off and on again.

It made no difference, and eventually the connection came back by itself. All's good...

...Except now every hour or two I lose the DSL carrier (according to my modem - Linksys WAG320N). This is followed by a re-sync at a lower speed, and followed an hour or two later by another loss of DSL carrier, and re-sync at the original speed.

I've just changed the filter back to the original one in case that makes a difference (we'll see...)

Is this normal? Any ideas as to what exactly is going on?

Had this happen previously, with my old modem following a previous outage. It became a permanent problem with that modem which ended up with me buying a different one. I don't expect to have to buy another modem each time an outage occurs  :-\

(...and whilst I was typing this the connection has dropped again!)

It could be the modems are packing up due to heat/electrical damage. Or something totally unrelated, like a loose cable or plug socket. I know my Netgear went strange last year, completely stuck in a reset loop. It killed my sync, because the exchange thought I had some sort of error. Could not get the router working. But I plugged it back in this month, to test if it still works, and it's perfect. So no idea what happened.

With your own connection, we would need to look at what could possibly be wrong, check the wires/modem/pc etc before moving on to other things. Do you have any details on the sync and noise levels from the routers status page?
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

This isn't related to last night's outage, this is a problem at the exchange, on the line or in your house. As Ben says, if you can give us some stats, we can try to see what's happening. A BT speed test would be useful too.

I've actually only just managed to find the decent ADSL stats page on my modem/router, seems to be hidden away somewhere! The normal page just shows if it is connected and if so, at what speed.

Anyway, I waited a bit to see if the problem continued and it did, so I called IDnet support and something strange happened - whilst on the call I could hear my broadband signal and the modem kept dropping out. I unplugged the modem and I was told that my line would be re-profiled to see if that helped, and after reconnecting the modem I couldn't hear the broadband noise, and have not had a single disconnection since...

So that seemed pretty bizarre, but it fixed the problem!
