Hello everybody,
One problem solved, another one appears  :P
I'm not sure to post this in the appropriate topic.
I just installed an application - SDLX - that modified my Microsoft Visual C++. And now when I try to open this application, I get the infamous message:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error
Runtime error!
program: c:\program\sdlint\sdlx\s42subst.exe
Abnormal program termination

I'm sure there's a simple fix but... I don't know it. Thanks a lot for your help!

Nothing worked... I've tried everything and as you can see on Proz link, I don't even have support for SDLX.
I get the same error when I open Word. Something is wrong with my PC, it's obvious.
Any ideas? Or does someone know a good and nice computer tech in the Ashford, Kent area?

Glenn

Can you do a restore to before you installed the software?

Is it just that one program? It will either be that you have the wrong Visual C++ version installed (or corrupt, so needs reinstalling) or the program it's self is bugged. :(
Can you see any windows updates for Visual C++? Is the software provider able to tell you which version of Visual C++ they use and need?

Ben: the software uses the version 5 of Visual C++ and the wizard installed it when I installed the software. This software - SDLX - has been running fine on my machine for years, with XP or 7. I had to uninstall it to install something else and when I installed it again the Visual C++ error appeared. But it's not just this program: I have the same error when opening word, I simply click "OK" and I can use Word. I almost never use Word so I don't know when the Word problem appeared but one month ago I think. I didn't pay attention to this Word issue, I think I should have. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word, error still here.

Glenn: yes, I did a restore, the error remained.

I have contacted the provider but their support is awful and I think I already know this answer: it's a MS problem not ours. I'm contacting MS tomorrow. Thanks a lot to all of you and let me know if you have new ideas  :)

Technical Ben

Hmmm. Sounds like it removed something it should not on the uninstall? Did it leave a log? I'm not able to help with the log, but someone might.

The problem is solved  :D :D :D
I had to buy another piece of software to be able to re-install my old software. It wasn't an error, just a way to force me to make a purchase. I had no other choice, I'm self-employed and I use this software for 50% of my turn-over. Unbelievable...

Demanding money with menaces, IMO. Might be worth a word with Trading Standards.

Glad to hear it's sorted. However, any hints on what this "other software" is, or why it stopped all a sudden?  :dunno:

Can't comment on the specific software concerned but in the day job I often find that OS updates of any flavour can randomly break previously working code.

Technical Ben

Yep. But I'm confused on the comment on how it's some ruse to get people to pay money. If it's not a "bug" or "obsolete code" then what's going on here?  ???

Depends on the software Ben.

Sounds like a couple of bits of software I support where the site licence has to be renewed yearly and a code supplied to each user or the activations extended by logging into the supplier's portal (something I have to do for individuals when the department charged with licence management misses them off the list and they ring up and complain that their software is telling them their activation has expired).

This does sound a little fishy though TBH.
