Hi all

A week ago I upgraded to ADSL2+ and the good news is my download speed now averages 16Mbps and upload 0.7- 0.9 Mbps.
However, since the upgrade I lose my internet connection a number of times a day. I can't be sure how regularly this happens as our computers are not on all day every day.

I am computer literate but have never needed to get involved in line stats. etc. so I am hoping there is a simple answer to the problem. The modem/router is a NETGEAR DG834, four years old. I have rebooted the modem a couple of times but only for a few minutes.

Any ideas where to start?

Do you leave your router on 24/7? I just wondered as you would maybe notice the router lights going off and back on. Also are you on the latest firmware for that router? ADSL2 + lines are more susceptible to noise and that can be an issue for some peoples lines as well. If you could post your routers stats that would help to start the ball rolling, then people could take at them for you.  :)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Hi Gary

Router is normally left on 24/7. Lights are only visible when I am at computer as router is under desk! I have not upgraded the firmware since purchase in early 2008.

I am attaching stats, are these the ones you need for starters?

Rik

Upgrade the router firmware for starters, Dave. Also, you're still in the training period, so will have some instability as the line finds its level.

Dave use the knowledge base link on the bottom of the navigation panel on the left of the configuration interface, this should take you to the firmware download area.

Thanks all

I downloaded the latest firmware earlier, hopefully by Saturday the line should have settled down.

Firstly, I suspect this thread should now be moved to the 'networking and routers' page, but here goes;

My connection eventually settled down but over the past week or so I keep losing the internet connection again. I have yet to update the firmware file which is sitting on my desktop but before I do I wonder if I should consider upgrading my four year old DG834 and 'start fresh', possibly using a N300/DGN2200 which seems to be popular for 'light' use. I am currently using ethernet cable (with an access point for occasional laptop use) but may go to wireless as there is a vulnerable 20 foot (sorry, six metres !) run of telephone wire feeding the router. This has however worked well for the past ten years.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Steve

I think if you decide to go WiFi I'd leave the phone line to router as short as possible. I also think N wireless gives very acceptable throughput for most tasks

If that's a normal telephone extension cable then it's not going to be good, especially on an ADSL2+ connection where the higher frequencies are used.
