VDSL modem/router comparison

Hi guys,

I'm just about to sign up for iDnet. I want an "all in one" solution and as such have been looking at the Billion Bipac 8200N and the Draytek Vigor 2750, as both have VDSL modems built in. I haven't managed to find any other similar units.

Could current users of either the Billion or the Draytek 2750 provide any thoughts?

I should add that I currently have a Draytek 2710 on my ADSL and am very happy with it.

I can't recall any posts re the two routers you've mentioned. The only one on this forum with popular mention as a one box solution is the Fritz!box You may find more on ThinkBroadband under the FTTC board. The other thought is whether IPv6 is of interest as that is another issue with some routers.

Joys of the search button, not sure those threads are terribly reassuring though. If you've not used the Openreach modem it is pretty stable and gives you plenty of choice in the router department.

Hi Steve,

I'm not 100% but as VDSL is engineer install, I imagine you're breaching the BT T&Cs by not using the Openreach Modem. AFIAK BT "Own" the the VDSL line as far as the ethernet port and require you to use the supplied hardware. That I think will only change when a wires only product launches (as with ADSL today).

As others have said, the OR modem is stable and fast, so I'd probably put your money into a dedicated Router right now - at least while the line establishes and stabilises itself.

Anton I notice your signature, is that a newish AEBS ? And if so is native IPv6 working yet?

That would be real bad news for some of us. Are you sure of that?

Well it's not bad news really, if you've an issue just stick the Openreach modem back before you get an engineer.

No, mine's one of the first dual band ones - IPv6 doesn't work. They'll update it one day

I think BT can tell what you have connected to the line as the OR Modem provides some diagnostics. They don't seem to care what you do, but my point was at least for the training period it seems to make sense to run vanilla kit so if there are issues, you're on solid ground.

Correct. BT's stated position is that the EU can replace the OR modem with their own kit but such equipment will not be supported by BT (OR) or your communications provider (ISP).

I went for Draytek. But I kind of need VPN abilities and built-in content filtering. Not sure the others do it. However I am struggling to get IPv6 working. Also I had to upgrade the firmware before it connected to VDSL.

That being said, I do not seem to get the same speed as with OR modem, but I blame content filtering. Not sure 68 or 74 makes a lot of difference at the end.
