Since I upgraded to ADSL2+ I have had  speeds Down: 8350 and up of 870. Now over the last few days my speed has dropped to about 5500 but the up speed is still the same.

My profile has not changed at all

What does a BT Speedtest show Den, or are those the results?

Wired or wireless? Not that I'd expect wireless to be impacted at that speed anyway. It sounds a bit like the problem I have now and again. Out of curiosity did your line originally go active on the 4th of <some month>? It's total speculation but it'd be interesting if true.

Steve

It could well be exchange congestion if its slow at peak periods ie evening time. Support should be able to check the capacity with BT. The Thinkbroadband Quality monitor is quite useful in this situation as you can see the minimum latency rise when the congestion occurs.

BT shows a down speed of 5890mb and up of 750mb and its wired. Strange as this has never happened before, do you think BT are pushing me towards fibre?  ::)

Try and save the results and try to get one first thing tomorrow morning when Internet usage is typically low.

Whatever time day or night the speed has been constant. It's only over the last few days that it has dropped by 2500mb even though my router stats have not changed.  :dunno:

It's possible that they're just messing with the network Den. As soon as they finished installing the new cabinets around here, my line stabilised. I know you're on the next exchange over from me, but I see no errors on my line at all and it can go from 15mb to 6mb in the space of a month. It's been stuck at 9mb recently though since the cabinets have been activated, so now I'm just waiting for this Thursday so I can get my fibre installed :D I lost speed all the time and I've had no help from BT or support other than there are no errors on the line, which I already knew. However I've become more convinced that they've switched me to a different cabinet as we now have one of those tiny cabinets instead of the standard sized one. Doing an FTTC search shows me connected to a cabinet opposite the Walnut pub over half a mile away, where as I was connected to one 40ft away for 30 years. Why in gods name they changed this is completely beyond me.

Incidentally, I thought you'd switched to FTTC too, Den?

No I moved from ADSL2 to ADSL2+ and that over a time moved me from 5.5mb to 8.3mb and has been steady everyday (and night) until this weekend. Just tried it again and it is still stuck at about 5500mb so I am fed up. \fibre has only been up and running for a few weeks on the Gresford exchange and is much cheaper with BT but I don't want to leave Idnet.

I went through the same. Support seems to be lacking currently and there's more talk that they seem to be concentrating more on business than us little customers, but I decided to upgrade to FTTC with IDnet as I can always move if I have problems and get the same indifferent responses I have been receiving in the last few months. As for BT (and Sky and Talk Talk) BT is the lesser evil, but there are charges they don't mention on the adverts, even the ones on their own site. The package I want had over £30 hidden charges, which meant is made more sense to stay where I am, and my mum threatened to cancel sky all together and suddenly our HD and sports package is £27 less with the sports package free for 6 months! Thanks to that, it worked out £10 cheaper than if I went to BT.

I will be clear though; if support is needed and I'm let down again, I will be immediately moving.

Bear in mind though Niall, you are now tied for 12 months.

Yeah it makes a mockery of my choosing to pay the IDNet premium to get quality support. I got an email almost out of the blue from support last night though so I've not entirely given up hope. It didn't inspire confidence though. It just asked if things were back to normal and pointing out that their logs had no record of a low sync event. Given that - like the OP - sync speed has never been the issue and that I've told them that several times it doesn't inspire confidence.

Still - they eventually found the fault I'd been telling them about back in November so we shouldn't give up :)

After mine running slow for the last few days it went even slower this morning and then I lost it completely. I phoned Idnet support at 9.00am and they said that BT had problems overnight and reboot the router. I rebooted and now all is well and I am back up to full speed.  ;D
