Java and Windows 7

For several years I have been using Java on a desktop running XP and Chrome to log into a remote computer. My Windows 7 laptop will not allow me to do this and I wonder if anyone knows if Windows 7 actually comes with Java in the first place?

I fairly sure Windows 7 does not come with Java Clive. Google - check java version will take you to Java.com. I possibly can't give the correct Url as using a different OS

Clive, as far as I know, there is no Java in the basic Win 7 build, it however available from Oracle/Sun.

MS removed their Java Virtual Machine from Windows after a legal dispute with the then Sun Microsystems in around 2005 I think it was so yes the download from Oracle is required.

Ah that makes a lot of sense - thanks very much for the answers. I tried downloading Java from a different website a while back but it just messed my computer up and I had to do a system restore. I'll have a go with the link Glenn has given and let you know how I get on.

Thank you so much! That has worked a treat and I now have access to the remote computer again. A good friend of mine spends all his nights at a telescope in Cambridge and allows me to log into his computer to see what he is observing. In actual fact all I really want to know is whether or not he is still alive since he is now 76 and will not go to bed until dawn arrives.

I only have a webcam for Cambridge weather. It doesn't stretch as far as MK.

Don't bother looking for one, nothing to see here apart from the Concrete Cows and roundabouts and they get boring very quickly

I'm very familiar with the myriad of roundabouts in MK since I used to pass that way quite frequently when I visited a friend in Bedford on my way to Cambridge. I'm convinced they were designed by a computer - just the same as the very complicated roundabouts of Bridgend.
