Hi all.

We had the mother and father of all thunderstorms here on Sunday - Real shock & awe stuff. I was in bed asleep (I work nights), so couldn't get to my computer to shut it off.

When I got up, everything seemed to be OK until I tried to connect to the net. All the router lights were on, but none of my network connections were functioning at all.

The PC HAD been reset by the storm, probably some kind of power surge, but as I say, all the lights on the router were on, and everything seemed fine physically. I rebooted the PC and router, but the same problem - Router synching, but no connection from the PC to the router, I couldn't even get the router Admin page up in my browser, repeated 404s.

I used the XP 'repair connection' utility, and it worked. I could then get my router admin page up, connect to the 'net, the whole 9 yards.

However, my Local Area Connection has dropped from 100 Mbps to 10 Mbps and all the speed tests I have run recently have been at about 1/2 to 2/3 normal (2-4 meg instead of about 6)

BT speedtester:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  7968 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 4745 kbps

Router Status:

Modem Status
Connection Status   Connected
Us Rate (Kbps)   448
Ds Rate (Kbps)   7968
US Margin   22
DS Margin   4
Trained Modulation   GDMT
LOS Errors   0
DS Line Attenuation   37
US Line Attenuation   21
Peak Cell Rate   1056 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast   0
CRC Tx Fast   0
CRC Rx Interleaved   1937
CRC Tx Interleaved   4
Path Mode   Interleaved

Speed tests:

Namesco:  Download Speed: 2318 kbps (289.8 KB/sec )   Upload Speed: 283 kbps (35.4 KB/sec )

thinkbroadband: Speed Down 2349.97 Kbps ( 2.3 Mbps ) Speed Up 376.72 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

Speedtest.net: Down 2443 Kbps Up 373 Kbps

Any suggestions? SOMETHING has gone doolally somewhere, but I'm buggered if I can think what!

Cheers,

Dave

God save us from those that believe in you.

If your network connection has dropped in speed, there may be some electrical damage to either the PC or the router. The quickest way to check would be to substitute another router, if the speed improves, the router's taken a hit. If that doesn't help, try a different ethernet cable (unlikely, but worth checking) and if that doesn't help, I'd plug in a PCI NIC and see what happens with that.

It's clearly not your profile, so the speed tests must be being constrained by some other factor. What happens if you ping the router from your PC? Do the results of an 'ipconfig /all' look normal?

Do you have a USB modem you could use, that would be another way to eliminate the router?

I wonder if when you have done the XP repair connection it has connected you at 10mb, rather than the 100mb?
