Hi Jimbo

These routers were supplied by BT for their customers and are locked to the BT service. You can purchase an unlocked one, or unlock it yourself, sources include eBay and the Jersey-based supplier in Dave's link.

Given your line, and the experience of others so far, I'd say it was worth trying one - if it solves your problems, you can sell the Billion and the Netgear.

Lance will be along later with his source - the router is also being talked about over on ThinkBroadband with the eBay seller, ydrol, getting praise.

Cheers Rik, yeah it's worth a shot like you say.  So far the Netgear is going well.  A few re-sync's though, however, always around the 2Mb mark.  I've just fitted a new shielded Belkin RJ-11 cable so hopefully that will help as well. :)

I'm off to search eBay now for that fella and the Router, but when you say locked to BT... does this mean it would not work with IDNet?  No.... am I being daft? Lol.

ReDGryphoN

I got mine from fleabay from Ydrol,

First class as new item pre unlocked and works a treat with IDNET

You need it unlocked or it will only work on BT

Hi all,  I bought my BT 2700HGV off YDROL  and the card for my laptop off digidave both on ebay and both great to buy off. Carefull if buying the BT 2700HGV that you buy the latest model and also if you would like to add voip it needs to be the HGV not the HG model. The one I bought off YDROL was the latest model, unlocked and with two voip lines ready to be activated. The card for my laptop was a 2wire and far better than my Belkin.  8)

Following recommendations here and in other forums I have also bought a 2700 HGV from ydrol on ebay and can recommend both the router and the seller.

Although my line still gives problems, the router hangs on to the connection during noise spikes better than my Speedtouch 585 did, it doesn't require frequent reboots as the Speedtouch did and also gives a slightly faster connection speed enabling me to sometimes get onto the 1024kbps profile.

I have also found that my noise spikes are caused by trains passing just under a quarter of a mile away but I don't know how to go about doing anything about this. Anyone any experience of this  ?

old Bill

Just to confirm these things are great on long lines. They normally give about half a meg higher then any other router. As a result i am syncing at 5184. If I try my Speedtouch its around 4633. I brought mine from a person called Ydrol on Ebay. He tends to post quite a bit on http://www.dslzoneuk.net/ .Once again I just cannot fault the router its top notch.

Lance

I also brought mine from ebay, although from a different seller to everyone else! They are really easy to unlock if it doesn't come unlocked anyway, so thats nothing to worry about.

In answer to your question, Rik, i'll email in the morning!

There was a long discussion of this sort of problem, involving Virgin trains, over on TB, Phil. The approach was to get the SFI team involved, so you will have to talk to support.

is there any BT BUSINESS HUB - BT 2700HGV that cant be unlocked.

i have no idea what the firmware on it is.

thanks

As far as I know there is none which can't be unlocked. However, with the latest version of the hardware, it is not possible to unlock by flashing the firmware, and you have to use the DNS method instead.

I have a older version of the hardware, with v4 firmare, so although I could unlock by flashing the firmware, I chose the DNS route and it works a treat!

edit for typo

It took Zyxel 5 days to respond and that after 4 emails.Broadbandbuyer however ,having been blasted by phone have reacted promptly and replaced the router which is now up and running.

>:D >:D >:D

Well having had the replacement Zyxel router for 7 days it is now back in the box, started getting issues 2 days ago with poor connection/erratic behaviour and now cannot connect at all.
Tried re-configuration and resets several times and nothing will make a difference, plain fact these routers are rubbish, the engineer at the hosting company I use said"The only use that router has is as an ornament, they have a dreadful reputation here I had 4 replacements before I gave up and found something else."

So 1 x Zyxel P=660H about to hit the dustbin, the product is a disaster as is the companies support system.Broadbandbuyer promised a full refund of carriage but that has failed to materialise.

Pursuing this any further will cost more than the product did in the first place(I have already sent a dozen emails and been held on the phone for lengthy periods, and for what) ,so lesson learned, never buy anything from Broadbandbuyer and avoid Zyxel products  at all costs.

Err no,that is not the case, the model P-660H has no reviews whatever. The model you have shows 95 reviews but only 39 of those are rated @5 star........read through ,there are plenty of not so happy experiences there.

Ebuyer should not be allowed to show the "awards" like that it is clearly designed to mislead.

Hi Scorpio,
At that distance I would say the 2700HGV would help. It seems to come into a class of its own on long unstable lines. So if that is the case I would try, worked for me  :D
Mr Music Man.

Lance

I think, for the 2700HGV, it's a case of the longer the line, the more likely the benefit.

I used the term P-660 H  for speed, mine is actually the P - 660 HW, which shows 95 reviews on eBuyer, I didn't actually read them because I got mine from Amazon, however I have just read through them and the overwhelming majority are 5* positive reviews.

Anyway, to be honest, I aint really bothered about the ratings, mine works 100%, I paid £29.99 delivered with a USB WiFi  Dongle from Amazon, if it goes wrong in the first year, I know I will get a full refund from Amazon, if it dies after a year, well I shan't lay awake worrying about it.

I am over the moon with mine, rock solid and fast connection.

Just to add to the above, I did a " test run " email to Zyxel, just a silly question, got a reply in 35 minutes, you can't knock that. ;)

Hi guys,

Just a quick update on the 2700HGV - It's still great! It's now been over 9 and a half days without even a resync. Previously, my best sustained period of sync was only around 2 days, but would usually resync once or twice a night, so a great improvement!
