I've just ordered a TomTom Go 5000 with lifetime map updates and always connected traffic information for Mum but just wondered how often I'll need to connect it to the PC to check for software and map updates.

Anyone know?

Steve

It's awhile since I used a TomTom but major map updates will be infrequent. If they still do Map Share that's relatively frequent and comes from joining the share community.

Cheers, it should arrive tomorrow so will set it all up and have said I will go for a test drive with Mum on Saturday so that I can show her how to use it and I can do all the first time startup stuff

Simon

We'll see you a week next Thursday then.  ;D

lol

Booked a few days off as worked quite a bit over Christmas but Mum wanted me to go with her for her Astra's first service as she couldn't quite remember how to get to the Vauxhall dealer she bought it from which is about 15 miles away.

She printed off the directions from the RAC she said so I went along to literally read them out (I have no sense of direction), we ended up completely lost despite asking several people how to get to the place who all gave different directions, cue lots of screaming and shouting, luckily we found our way home, she had to ring the garage and rebook the service for Monday, I can't get leave then so ordered this when we got back so hopefully she will be able to find her way there and back and can shout at it instead of me!

Even going to purchase and load Billy Conolly's voice on it in the hope it keeps her calm.

Map updates are quarterly but Map Share seems to update every time I connect it to the PC.

I think it's less important when the map updates, and more important when the roads change. If the roads are the same, then there won't be any updates... surely?   :thumb:
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

True Ben but if you are going to somewhere you've never been you wouldn't know this otherwise you wouldn't need the device.

Anyway, the device has arrived and it looks like its pretty much replacing the internal maps as its indicating a download time of nearly 4 hours!  :eek4: it's at times like this FTTC/FTTP would come in handy, thank goodness I'm on unmetered.

Anyway cheers all.

Lance

I use my tomtom [iPhone app] for longer journeys even if I know where I'm going as whilst I know the way I don't know the traffic conditions whereas tomtom does.

Might be the device/server and not the line?

Its finally finished the download and is currently updating the device which it is says will take about 55 minutes, def an overnight job this methinks.

All done and dusted apart from the fact the Billy Conolly voice I purchased and apparently loaded cannot be selected within the device itself.

I've raised a ticket with TomTom for help or a refund.

Acid test coming up tomorrow.

Yes waiting to hear from TomTom support.

I don't recall seeing any indication that voices weren't compatible with the 5000 and considering they use one account for everything and know what device I have you might have thought it would have not allowed me to proceed with the purchase as Google does with the play store.

Also logged into the account from the device itself to activate lifetime traffic before I tried to purchase the add on so their system should know everything about the device as its one per account.

Cheers for the link Steve

Grrrr.
