Anyone with a Windows 8 Phone?

Just wondering if anyone here used a windows 8 phone, more specifically a Nokia Lumia with idnet email and how they might have email configured. There is a problem with Windows 8 phones using POP3 in that if you delete an email on your phone, it also deletes it from the server. There is no setting in Windows 8 Phones to "keep mail on server".

Does anyone have any experience of Windows 8 phones and POP3 or IMAP experiences with them?  Thanks.

Simon

In my opinion, the best way to set up emails on any mobile device is using IMAP.  That way, the mail stays on the server until you either download it using POP3, or delete it.

What you are wanting to do is currently entered as a feature request on the official Window Phone site, it's a common complaint. It comes up on one of my sites quite regularly. I've no idea if Simon's suggestion will work but there's a message in the feature request thread to suggest that it won't but it might be worth a try anyway. That's about as much as I know I afraid.

Simon, Zappa,

Yes, I've seen that. I guess it's a case of suck it and see. I didn't think that IMAP worked like that, but I guess that there is only one way to find out. I thought that IMAP synchronized folders and all email within folders so that all devices using the email account had the same contents.

So, does that mean that I can have my Home PC set up as POP3 and my Windows Phone set up with IMAP and not loose any emails to my Home PC ??

Mmmmmm?

Simon

What do you mean by "losing mail to your home PC"?  If you use IMAP on your phone, the emails will remain on the server, until you download them via POP3 onto your main PC, then, they will no longer appear on the phone.

Simon,

OK. So, I am assuming that I can have my idnet.com account and use it as a pop3 email service on my home pc and also use it as an IMAP service on a windows phone?

So does that mean if I set up a windows phone as IMAP and I delete an email on my phone, that email will still be available to download to my pop3 email on my home PC?

I thought that IMAP synchronized folders, which would mean that if I deleted an email on my windows phone, it would be deleted on the server as well??

Simon

I have my iPhone and laptop set up using IMAP, and my main PC is POP3.  If I delete an email on my phone, it goes into the IMAP Trash folder, so if I wanted to, I could still recover it by moving it back into my Inbox (on the phone), then downloading it to the PC (using POP3).  I actually have my email accounts set up as both IMAP and POP3 on my main PC, so I can move stuff around that way (such as emails sent via the phone which I want to download a copy of and keep).  I realise that adds complexity, but it works for me.  You can then move emails from your IMAP folders to the main PC, simply by copying them from the IMAP 'Sent' folder, to the POP3 'Sent' folder, for example, which also deletes them from the server, as they would then be downloaded.  Does that make sense?

;D

It's one of those things I know how to do, but not how to explain!

Thanks for that, I think I get it.  ???

The only thing is that you are using an iphone, not a Windows 8 phone and therein lies the potential problem because if you scout around other forums you will find that people are complaining that windows phones don't have the full compliment of options when setting up email accounts. Namely, the option of "leave email on server" which iphones and android phones do have. That's why I was really after the opinions of any one who might be using idnet's email services with a windows phone such as a Nokia Lumia.

Steve

Looks like the only option is IMAP then, however that's all I'd use on a phone anyway.

OK. Well if I do decide to go down the Windows phone route, i'll update this post with how I get on.

Cheers.

Simon

There would be something seriously lacking if a Windows phone was not capable of setting up an IMAP email account.  I think that's probably the easiest option.

Well after extensive research and much pondering, I have decided not to go down the Windows 8 Phone root. There seems to be too many bugs and typically with MS continuous updates that appear to upset the workings of the phone and third party apps.

Can't afford an iPhone and anyways, I dislike anything Apple! So it looks like it has to be Android, but will have to wait a couple of months before my SIM only contract is up before I can get one. A middle of the range Sony is looking most likely, probably the SP.

Thanks to all anyway.

Steve

I like(d) my iPhone but I've moved over to Android very easily. I use a Nexus 5 sim free bought from Google Play.
