I use eMClient for occasional emailing and recently each time I log on I see an error message beginning: "eMClient can't verify identity of "imap.idnet.com" The host name doesn't match the name specified in the certificate........". [It continues at some length].

Next comes "myusername@idnet.com. Connecting to myusername @idnet.com failed. [IMAP] An attempt to connect to myusername@idnet.com failed. This could be caused by temporary server unavailability or incorrect settings. Do you want to check the settings?"

The settings look OK to me so far as I can tell and emails work perfectly so I've been simply cancelling away the error messages but it's beginning to get a bit irritating. Should I do something? Is this problem related to Simon's thread of August 02 "Email certificates -  what's the deal?"

My understanding of email is extremely shallow! :conf:

Simon

I never got a reply to my thread on here  ::)  so I ended up contacting IDNet, and received this response:

Quote from: BrianHi Simon,

Do you know what server you are using? If using SSL then you need to make sure the server name is securemail.idnet.com to ensure your email is using security. it may not necessarily keep a local copy of the certificate if you are using the host name that matches on the certificate.

Kind regards,

Brian

Quote from: SimonHi Brian,

I've been using imap.idnet.com, as this is just on my laptop.  I download the emails via POP on the main PC once a day, or so.

I'll change the server next time I'm on the laptop and see what happens.

I was more curious as to what the certificates were for, and how they appeared in the first place.

Cheers,

Simon.

Quote from: BrianHi Simon,

Your PC will only store the certificate if there is an exception. The mail server name on the certificate is securemail.idnet.com but because you are using something different to what appears on the certificate it is stored locally. If you use the same one as on the certificate then it will not store a copy.

Kind regards,

Brian

So, it might be worth changing the server to securemail.idnet.com, and see if that helps.

Aah! That seems to have done the trick :fingers:. An email sent 4 days ago appeared though other emails including tests to myself from my Hotmail account have all arrived promptly. Thanks Simon :thumb:

Great, thanks for letting us know.  :)

This very helpful thread prompted me to check my email account server settings, which I have not changed for many years. I use incoming and outgoing smtp.idnet.com. I use all authenticated and no SSL. Present settings work over my IDNET ADSL link as well as 3G/GPRS and external WiFi.

I see from IDNET help pages that both POP3 and IMAP incoming have changed to mail.idnet.com. Outgoing is unchanged. Also see that POP3 and IMAP SSL options use securemail.idnet.com. This has raised a few questions:

1) Should I change to mail.idnet.com with no SSL as at present.
2) Is it better to change to securemail.idnet.com and use incoming SSL.
3) Does outgoing smtp.idnet.com work with and without SSL.
4) Where can I find the ports or do they come up automatically.
5) As a matter of interest does SSL work on POP3.idnet.com and imap.idnet.com
6) Will new settings work over my IDNET ADSL link as well as 3G/GPRS and External WiFi access.

Thanks
Dave
