We have two desktops running Windows 8.1 but this query would apply to other versions of Windows.

I always install  Important Microsoft Updates but I am not sure about the optional updates of audio and graphics drivers which are offered from time to time.

Should I always install these or is it a case of 'if it aint broke don't fix it'?

I'm very much an ''if it ain't broke..." kind of guy.  :)

Personally I wouldn't touch sound or graphics drivers from Microsoft unless it was the only option. Far better to get the latest drivers from the manufacturer I'd say. In fact that really goes for all the hardware in your PC. That's not to say the Microsoft drivers are going to cause problems but they are very unlikely to get the best out of your kit.

One other point I think worth mentioning; if Microsoft is detecting that a driver upgrade is available, you should probably go and check to see if there's an updated driver from the appropriate hardware vendor.

Some times MS are the only ones to update some older hardware to work on current operating systems. So it's the only choice on occasion.  :dunno:
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.
