Speeds on IDNet

In November I migrated from a middling Sky connection to Pulse8 and what i hoped would be a great TTB backed connection.

Pulse8 have been excellent, but i continue to be frustrated by the single thread download speeds.

I sync at the full 80/20, yet my single thread speeds on the ThinkBroadband speed test are usually in the 45-50Mobps region.

I did get a glimpse of what they can deliver, when we moved product codes and I saw the single thread download matching the multi thread download:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=148533532502410194093

but this is more typical of what I now see

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=148611094729015533296

Pulse8 don't seem to be able to get anywhere with the TTB support teams.  TTB just seem to respond back with 'you just can't expect single thread speeds to match multi thread speeds.'

It doesn't affect my day to day usage of the internet, but does leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

I'm slightly loathe to change as this will incur additional cost to migrate away from the TTB MPF connection I am now on.

However I could be more than tempted to come back to IDNet if the single thread speeds consistently match the multi thread speeds.

Would you mind posting me some of your VDSL ThinkBroadband speed test results, so I can do a direct comparison.  The closer you are to full sync the better but as I've tried both 80 and 40Mbps connections and seen similar slow downs, I don't think the sync speed is that critical, so fire away.

Many thanks for your assistance.

I'm out in the sticks on some pretty antiquated infrastructure. According to my router my 80/20 connection syncs at 63157Kbps/2000Kbps

Hi Zap,

You can't be that far out in the sticks if you are syncing at 63157.

Your the response is a bit jiggly and your latency is very high.  Do you have interleaving on your line?

Just looked at my posting history.  Previous post here was January 2010.  Looks as though things have quietened down a lot since then.

Simon

They have indeed, but some of us are still here!   ;D

I'm not sure about interleaving. I had some major issues when this line was first connected which caused it to continually drop connection and re-sync. There was an engineer fix but the line never really seemed to recover which might explain the high latency. That said my throughput seems quite consistent. Here's another test :)

Here's mine from a 40/10 connection up in the North East!

Are you guys using the flash or non-flash testers?  They are both similarly jittery (possibly suggesting the non-Flash version) and you both have very high pings; I'm on 12ms with TTB.

If either of you run the TBB BQM, I would be interested in seeing those as well.

Hi Simon,

Now there's a name I recognise. ;)

I'm not sure which version I was using but here's one using Flash:

Here's my BQM:

I'm pretty sure my high latency is due to my location, I live by the sea. When I lived in London my ping was a consistent 7ms with IDNet.

I suspect you might have used the non-Flash version.  This one looks a lot smoother.

Looking at your BQM, it looks as though there was quite a bit of action going on on your connection when you did the speed test.  Your ping has dropped from 32 to 20 this time round, which looks like your ping base line anyway.

Feeling much more encouraged to give IDNet another go on the basis of these results.  Would be nice to see a few more as people drift in and out of the forum.

Hi Gill,

Any chance of posting the graph that goes with the results, please?

Thanks,

Jon

I was up to 62Mbps but a battery fault (tiny 5 volt) meant a pair swap, so I lost about 7Mbps down. As far as latency that varies to different serves, Speedtest.net gives me about 8ms to to servers in maidenhead. Latency will vary across different servers, and TBB use Zens network for tests I believe. Mines a non flash test I as I wont have flash installed on my mac.

Thanks for these.  Couldn't respond yesterday as I had a bit of an issue getting back into the forum, that Simon has thankfully resolved.

I notice a couple of you have quite jiggly upload speeds, which is something I don't see on my Pulse8 TTB connection, but in general the results are very encouraging.

Still fighting the battle with TTB via Pulse8 at the moment, but IDNet is a place I feel comfortable with I may be returning in the next couple of weeks.

I use Qualcomms Streamboost with my router so that may have something to do with squiggly upload with its cloud based QoS coming into play, also I have quite a lot on my LAN, a 4K smart  TV, Sky Q, a networked B&W Wireless Zeppelin speaker, printer, soundbar plus blu-ray player, Ps4-Pro, iPhone and iPad plus my iMac so any of those things could be chatting in the background at any time.

That would make sense.  There's always a danger of reading too much into what is after all a snapshot of that moment in time.

Gary

Very true, also with the amount of background port scanning these days like ACK scans Fin attacks and minor DoS attacks that has to effect things too, most routers take a fair pummelling these days when you look at firewall logs.  :)

I'm just outside Croydon, basic suburbia. But unfortunately I'm a fair distance from the cabinet...

All results appreciated.  My issues with TTB follows me if I downgrade from 80/20 to 40/10, so any speed test result that shows the single thread speed matching the multi thread speed fils me with confidence.

Although I feel confident that IDNet would offer me a higher quality connection, it seems I can migrate more cost effectively to Zen or Aquiss at the moment.  The joys of coming off a non-BTW connection!  :slap:

jaydub

Uno and Aquiss have blown me out in terms of a migration path, so it is a straight forward Zen vs IDNet shoot out.

Much more hefty migration fee for IDNet, but call costs are significantly cheaper and the 11 months for 12 offer wipes out half the migration fee if I pay upfront.

Just need to size up whether Zen LLU provides any significant advantage of IDNEt's BTW offering.

Lance

Idnet do use another backhaul provider in addition to BTw. Maybe give them a call to see what is an option for you  ;)

I believe Gary is on a Zen LLU through IDnet.

FTTC using Zens backhaul indeed, Glenn. Its not been without its issues with single threaded problems I must admit. Brian managed to sort those out by talking to Zen as the problem was happening to Zen users, since then all has been ok, apart from loosing 12Mbps because of a pair swap at the cab :(

Edit. If you have issues with Zen IDNet say they have to put you into a new 12 month contract to go back to BTw on the same package which seems a bit rough tbh.
